My guess is the player is watching the parking brake handle switch. That should be a simple mod.

no one said the driver wanted to watch tv but it would be nice if you had kids in the car.
Don't be so close minded. there are plenty of reasons to want to do this. no one says the driver has to watch the video. |

No, but it's very hard not to be distracted by it. Have you ever tried to ignore a TV within your sightlines in a restaurant while someone is talking to you. It's just one more thing fighting for your attention.

never said id watch movies while in motion. Kinda cool to be able to play movies for passengers or so while driving long trips. The fact that its Idrive is a distraction itself , a movie wouldnt be any more of a distraction while driving. flipping through navigation settings and inputting addresses while driving is dangerous, im sure lotsa ppl do that. hah. You gotta be real stupid to get sucked into a part of a movie to completely forget you where driving and hit someone. I dunno if ill get the mod but its an option.

I drove long distance in the States with a portable DVD on the dash. Doesn't distrct too much. Not more than any kenwood/Alpine/whatever DVD touchscreen combo.
I do not encourage it but I would see the benefit. Traffic Jam is all I can say. Anyone ever been around Munich at rush hour or vacation time? "Stau" sucks. Oh, and it is not the handbrake in the current generation. Motion sensor is my guess.

With my '09 128i if the handbrake is on I can watch a movie. With the brakes on and the handbrake off the movie video blanks.

Anyone caught doing this should have to spend a month in jail. It's bad enough that people are already texting and screwing around with iPods while they're driving, and we damn sure don't need them trying to watch movies and do it. There's just no good reason whatsoever to have this capability.
If the passengers want to watch a movie on a long drive, give them a laptop or a portable. Same goes for the kids. |

No they're not. Not even close. Even an unattentive passenger is an extra set of eyes seeing what's going on around them. If you're about to crash and aren't paying attention, there's a good chance they will be. That's exactly why talking on a cell phone, even a hands free one is more dangerous than talking to a passenger. It's scientifically proven, and there's no point in even disputing it. A car has no business having video playing where the driver can see it. There's no justification for it whatsoever. |

When I saw this thread posted, I wanted to chime in. I'm glad others are saying what I thought though. It will be a distraction, and it is human nature to glance over and get involved. Twice, over the past few years, I can remember people making the 6pm news for getting pulled over while having a TV in the driver's view.
I've seen those stories twice now, and both times, I immediately thought: "what an idiot". I don't think I'm alone here. |

Facts state that passengers and cell phones cause more accidents. Google top ten causes for accidents. Sure passengers can help you drive or even warn you of possible accidents, or they can stress you out too. Believe it or not, a lot of drivers get into accidents just by getting into a debate or some sort of discussion with other passengers and get into fender benders etc because they where not paying enough attention. Some people just arent good multitaskers. Definately cell phones are worse in my oppionion. Not so much a movie playing. |

There ARE NO studies done comparing a driver watching a movie to talking to a passenger or on a phone, because it's so fucking stupid the answer is obvious, and it's already illegal in every single state! It's one thing to bring this up in a thread, but it takes an entirely different kind of idiocy to try and say that watching a movie while you're driving down the road is less dangerous than talking to a passenger. How old are you anyway? |

No, not watching tv does make the top 10 list of avoiding accidents, along with
reading a novel while driving standing on your head while driving sex while driving having a blood draw while driving baking a cake while driving hosting a dinner party while driving building a house of cards while driving guitar lessons while driving breastfeeding while driving etc... |

Your assuming I live in the U.S. as well. I totally agree that watching a movie while driving is extremely dangerous.. LOL.. Also, driving (to clubs or to events) here in Germany your passengers are allowed to drink alcohol. What would be cooler than watching a movie or music videos and having some beers on the way to more drinking? Last edited by romak47; 09-10-2009 at 11:40 PM.. Reason: forgot facts |
