135i turbo failures -- update
So I got my car back today with two new turbos. Ran it through its paces and no problems so far. No more engine ticking. Hopefully all is back to normal.
As you can see, it looks like BMW is routinely looking for aftermarket parts to deny coverage. Luckily my car is clean because realoem lists the chargers alone at $1900 a pop. Below is the writeup, typos and all. Any BMW people want to take a look at the codes, SIB, or case number to see if there is any more info to give us? RAN SHORT TEST. RETRIEVED FAULT CODE 20FF STORED UNDER DME 5 TIMES. NOT PRESENT. FOUND SIB 12 28 07. CHECKED NO AIR LEAK OR RESTRICTIONS. NO AFTER MARKET MODULES INSTALLED. DID THE MEASSURED ACCORDING TO THE SIB. ALL THE MEASUREMENT NORMAL. BUT FOUND THE BOTH TURBOS ROD NOT MOVING WHEN APPLY VACUUM TO THEM. SENT TC CASE TO REQUEST REPLACEMENT. CASE NUMBER 30634913 APPROVED TO REPLACE BOTH TURBOS. REPLACED THE BOTH TURBOS. CLEARED FC.

Good to hear you got your ride back, but i got ask. In order to remove and replace the turbos they had to "pull the motor". Say aint so One and only reason i never got an B5 S4 was in order to replace turbos, the motor had to be yanked.......I pray that the turbos can be removed from under the car with out pulling the motor..........I pray

I have heard that any D.I. (direct injection) motor will make 'some" ticking sound.
It is a like(simular) to common-rail diesel engines. Part of the nature of the beast of the sound they make at idle. |

Did you have any software on the car prior to the turbos failing?

No, that is the $10,000 question (literally). They said the turbos had a defect. One turbo, sure, I can see that. But two turbos? On the same car? That is why I posted the case number. Would be great if one of the BMW people who frequent these boards could look it up and give us more info. (hint!)

I don't think the motor needs pulling to replace the turbos. I recently spoke to a tech at my dealership & he said he replaced the turbos on an N54 by removing the subframe.

Luckily each turbo is now only about 800 for the manifold and turbo assembled from BMW. When this thread was created about 1600 a piece... |

Wow sounds like a good deal but still...I wouldn't want to fork out the 1600+ dollars plus labor for the repair. So pretty much if you hear wastegate rattle its safe to assume the turbos need to be replaced? Isn't there an adjustment for the actuator arms?
