change brake pad so soon?

hi,

i had this new warning light come on today and after referring to the manual it means that the break pads are worn. The car only has 18K on it and is a year and a half old. Seems little soon to me. Could it be throwing up a false warning because of the extreme temperatures? (-20C).

thanks,
tt.

I am surprised you got 18,000 miles out of them! Soft brakes, lots of dust, but quiet!

So I guess it is time? Would this be covered under the maintenance plan? BTW, it's 18000km, not miles.

That sounds a bit soon to need brakes. In the US, it's covered under maintenance, don't know about Canada.

Check your warranty/service manual.

it s an option at the time you purchase the car from BMW if you like that part of coverage of course it is extra money unlike USA has them covered for free.

I have a 08 M3 and I don't drive it hard most of the time. Currently I have 65000kms and never changed my brake. I was surprised and worried if the computer sensor might made some mistake. So, I had the service checked and they said it was still looking good. Although I can feel the brake isn't as sharp as they were brand new, but still doing their work. Usually the brake would be serviced around 40000km-50000km from other make I had owned before.

Ever since asbestos was outlawed, brake pads have very short lives. The Infiniti G coupe I used to have was lucky to go about 14K miles on a set of front pads. Yeah, lots of dust. If you drive hard, or have an auto trans, that does not help things any.

I still don't understand this but the tech explained to me saying because it has performance brake and under regular use they can last for a very long time. I suppose it is a good thing that I don't need to dig in my pocket for that extra cash. Now that I have my new 135i I will see if there s a difference as the mileage builds up.

it depends on the driving style and wether you rely on the gear to slow down or purely on the breaks..
dealer was surprised that after 40000 km my car's brakes were still fine specially when considering that I got lots of uphills / downhills driving.

40000km = 40,000 kilometers, not thousand miles

That's roughly 25k miles...

My brakes have in the last couple weeks started to squeek and squeel when I'm coming to a stop. It's starting to get rather annoying. I wonder if that is because they are getting low. Car has 21K miles on it and was just in for HPFP recall and TPS replacement. I would have thought they would check the brakes.

They do indeed have a recall for brake squeel. I am getting mine replaced a bit early (3500 miles left) for this reason.

Awesome, I'm going to contact the dealership then because this sqeeling is driving me crazy. It's not real bad and only when slowing to a stop but it's everytime I stop.

I have 44k miles on my car, never had a brake service and the little brake indicator says I still have 4600 miles ot go. So roughly 50k on a set of stock brakes, I dont know how you guys are eating through brakes so quick.
