Autocross tire size help: email Hoosier
Could everyone that plans to run or would like the option to run next year in stock email this address: info@hoosiertire.com and ask them to make a 265/30/19 for the 2012 season for autocross.
Without them making it, there may not be a choice of tire to run in stock, which will force a STU or BSP build where the car will probably just be trophy fodder...

So, you're thinking the 295/30-19 for the rear will work, correct?
Yes, I'll send Hoosier a note asking about the 265/30 size--hopefully, there will be enough demand for them to make it to production. |

I think the 295/30/19 will work in the rear. The fender is pretty flat from the factory and you get a 5 mm spacer.
My fear is the cost of tires in stock will drive me to build a stu car that can't run down the wad cars.

1M easily takes 285/35R18 with room to spare so 295 is not going to be an issue.

Running an 18" wheel will take it out of stock class.

I'm working with someone at Tirerack to get a "nice" Hoosier to stuff on the 1M.

Guys, what are the optimal, not maximum, tire widths for greatest contact patchs on the OEM wheels?
From what I understand, fitting the greatest size possible can actually reduce contact patch and make the car "squirmy". They are 9.5x19F and 10.5x19R right? |

I left the sizing factor open. I want to see what TR specs out. Yes, I can do a size close to OEM, but if there is room to get a wider tire on there, I'd like to do it. Rims are another factor too. I don't want to be bankrupt in buying a set.

Here's the response I got from Hoosier this morning on the original question about the 265/30-19 availability:
Because we do not make one in that size. |

The 295/30/19 will fit on the stock size wheel. The 265's looked stretched on the wheel to me.

Basically any new size we do is going to be based off potential sales - *and volume - to justify the tooling and mold expense.
Is there a chance ? *Possibly ? *Again it is going to have to be more than a single application to make it happen. And it wouldn't be just a profile change, probably would entail *a width change - somewhere down into the 245 range?? Is it an anti-lock brake or AWD issue why you cannot use our 265? That is the email I got back this morning.

I have a nice relationship with Hoosier and Jeff Speer. And economies of scale apply to tire production. I'm sure there is something close that will fit.

There is a 265/35/19 that may rub but it may work. I would prefer a 265/30/19.

The "stay tuned department:" From my friend at the Tirerack. Good guy and an autocrosser.
I’m wading through a week of emails. No change in wheel options so far, but still looking. As for tires, our fitment engineer is going to check drawings of some wide Hoosiers on OEM-width wheels to see how phat we can go and still clear. I hope to have that late today or early tomorrow when he gets a minute to pull it together. Back to you soon.

From my friend at the Tirerack (I forgot that there is a specific tire section here at 1Addicts):
Our guy Gill moderates the wheel and tire forum on the site, and has owned a 135, so he gets it, and would be a good place to point people as I am not in sales here at the Rack. I’ve copied Gill on this so he is aware of our conversation. We’ve had a 1M here to physically measure, and our fitment engineer is a BMWCCA track guy, so he has great personal interest in the car. Fitment front and rear is a little tight. And how tight is too much may depend on personal preference, and how much self-clearance you feel you can get away with in SCCA stock class (technically, none). The ideal track set up with Hoosiers is 275/35-18 front and rear on 18x10 wheels. Offset is critical, as there are clearance issues front on the inside as well as at the fender lip. Also, for those cruising info on the web care should be taken when looking at street tire fitment info versus what a Hoosier in the same or similar size will be like. Overall diameter also begins to play a role in the fitment, especially in the front. 275/35-18 works great front and rear on the proper sized and offset wheels. But as everyone is finding, the 19” Hoosier options for the front fall on either side of ideal. 235/35 is too narrow for sure, and the wider and taller than OE 265/35-19 may have clearance issues due to diameter. Anything wider on stock offset front wheels may need a small spacer to push the tire away from the strut, as inboard clearance is tight. Personally I would be tempted to try the 265/35-19 on OE wheels in the front, being prepared for some rubbing and the need for spacers and/or a tire size change to a narrower/shorter size. This one is close enough that it will need to be fitted and driven to verify that it won’t rub lock to lock with the dynamics of suspension travel, etc. I’d match that with 265/35-19 on the rear for a square fitment. I think this car will have plenty of low- to mid-speed understeer inherent in the chassis, so going wider on the rear will only increase that. And let’s face it, lots of autocross time is spent transitioning and in the corner. Less time is spent powering away from the corner. With limited negative camber in the front and very low profile sizes my guess is this car is going to eat front tires if care is not taken. Just look at what happened for most people that tried 135s. The shoulder of the front tires corded quickly. You can probably get away with 295/30-19 on the OEM wheels in the rear, but again I don’t think it’s the ticket. There just aren’t that many cars that will use modest width 19” R-compound tires, so I would not hold out for Hoosier to tool up anytime soon. And as awesome as it will be for you guys to race this car, there aren’t all that many 1M cars that will be autocrossed in stock class, so… Here is a matrix of some Hoosier dimensions for comparison: ________________________________ section width when ________________________________ mounted on X" wheel Hoosier A6_______OD (in.)__________9”______10” 275/35R18_______25.5_____________10.5____10.9 235/35R19_______25.6_____________10.2____10.6 265/30R19_______26.1_____________11.1____11.5 OEM 245/35R19_______25.7_____________10.0 265/35R19________________________________10.9 Thanks, and keep me posted as to what you try. Enjoy the new ride!

I wonder if TR would be willing to significantly discount the 265/35/19 for someone to test.

After looking at tirerack, the stock tire on the front is about half an inch shorter than a Hoosier 265/35/19 which would be about 1/4 inch in the fender well.
Anyone care to walk outside to their car and eyeball if there is 1/4 inch of usable clearance on a stock suspension?
