No I'm sorry I don't want the AC on.
No I'm sorry I don't want the AC on.
OK it's 55f outside....I want the inside temp of my car at 70.....but every time I put the HVAC on Auto it kicks on the AC. So what is it doing cooling down the air and then heating it up? |

There's a reason it's called air conditioning and not refrigeration. It takes humidity out of the air, generally making things more comfortable. If you set the temp to 70, it will get to 70, with or without the a/c on, but it will be dryer air if you leave the a/c on.

I'm pretty sure the compressor only engages if the outside air temperature is above a specific threshold, otherwise you'd risk freezing and damaging the AC lines.

I'm in agreement. I don't like the fact that the AC runs in the winter when it's not really needed. Understand the whole "air conditioning" concept. But IMO it's a waste of power and fuel.

1. Selecting AUTO engages the compressor at temps above freezing.
2. Simply pushing the A/C button will turn off the compressor. 3. When the car is shut down in AUTO mode with A/C shut off, it will restart the same way and you won't have to push the button. It is what it is. My 128i and 328i both use approximately 5~10% more fuel when running A/C so I turn it off unless cooling or defogging is required. Tom |

A bit like buying a dog and then barking yourself ....... Only time I'd ever bother to switch off the compressor would be when taking it on a track.

On cold days, you can press rest to keep the cabin warm. IE filling @ gas station, popping into a store for moment, etc.

Good grief...it's one button to push - deal with it, already! And...my 2011 128i M-Sport doesn't turn off the AUTO mode when I turn off the A/C.
I remember when "climate control" consisted of a heater for cold weather and manual roll-down windows in warm weather. These dang kids these days!

Just set it and forget it!
These cars are designed very well and the power loss is minimal if any. Also, it is good to have the ac run occasionally in the winter to keep the system lubricated. If you don't use the ac all winter you will see more issues down the road because the system is not suppose to go that long without lubrication/use. |

always on Automatic AC mode. I can't imagine getting a car without this option.
one more advantage to having it is that windows are always dry giving the ultimate visibility in cold humid time. mine is set to 22 degrees Celsius, all year around

My Audi has an "econ" button that allows the auto system to work as well as possible without running the compressor. I much prefer having the ability to leave the compressor off and hoping the 2010 I'm picking up tomorrow has that ability. Sounds like just hitting the a/c should do the trick.

Gentlemen, Gentlemen!
Leave it on. The interior air quality is much better, and it serves one major purpose; KEEPING THE WINDOWS DEFOGGED.
