Exhaust Mod(s)
I am completely stock and was thinking of doing one of four options: I want to modify only if I gain power or do not lose power, what is the best route to go and why?
1) akraprovic down pipe 2) akraprovic downpipe and 2ndary cat delete 3) 2ndary cat delete Or 4) just don\'t touch it, what BMW did stock is the best for a stock car

Bang for buck = DP. However, you will need to get a tune as well for the CEL.

The downpipes will give you a great bang for the buck power increase. Eliminating the primary cats right near the turbos will yield the biggest power boost. Mid Cat elimination will not increase power as much.
Also the smell might not be too appealing! You will definitely need a tune to eliminate the CEL. Most aftermarket tune options out there have the ability to block the signal from the affected O2 sensor. You'll definitely see a nice power increase from going with Tune + DP's |

Than what should I do?!? Im going to get my black chrome "///M3 edition" tips welded on within the next week and wanted to get any other work on the exahust out of the way...
Muffler delete? I obviously do not understand how the exhaust works on force induction engines lol hence why I am seeking help! I do not want to make the car slower to make it a little louder. What will the car love as well as myself? What is the best way to mod a stock exhuast on our cars, where it betters the car? I do not want to start buchering my exhuast... I just wish it wasnt so muffled! I do not want to start cut parts of my exhaust out if my car will suffer from it... What is typically done to get the results I am looking for? How would an M engineer modify their exhaust if it were their 1M? and in a somewhat BMW approved manner lol On my 135 I deleted the secondary cats but had the JB+. When I took out the tune and left the exhaust catless I felt like I lost a lot of that low end torque(huge reason why I love this car) when compared to the stock set up. This is why I am so skeptical... Help!!

Reducing backpressure on turbo-charged motors does not decrease torque ANYWHERE in the RPM range of the motor.
That being said, if you want actual functional mods (power) that also are pleasing to the ear, get catless down and mid pipes. |

Personally, I would start with the mid pipe first. Easy, fast and inexpensive and doesn't require a tune. The existing rear OEM resonator is not very restrictive. Then next step is catless DP's with a tune.

"Thanks for the email. Good timing on purchasing the exhaust, Akrapovic is increasing their prices Jan 1/2012 by 5% and the Bmw 1M downpipe price was underestimated pre-production and will be increased by double Jan 1/2012" I could've been fed BS but I doubt it, especially since the 5% increase aligns with what has already been confirmed. |
