135i with M package vs M1
Hey guys,
Just wondering if anyone could clarify the difference between the 135i with M package vs the M1. I see visible differences between the cars as far as the body is concerned....but what's different under the hood? Thanks! T

The BMW M1 (E26) is a sports car that was produced by German automaker BMW from 1978 to 1981.
In the late 1970s, Italian manufacturer Lamborghini entered into an agreement with BMW to build a production racing car in sufficient quantity for homologation.[2][3] The result was sold to the public, from 1978 to 1981, as the BMW M1. It was the only mid-engined BMW to be mass produced. It employed a twin-cam M88/1 3.5 L 6-cylinder petrol engine with Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection. A version of this motor was later used in the South African version of the BMW 745i, of which 209 examples were built between 1984 and 1986, as well as the E24 BMW M6/M635CSi and E28 BMW M5. The engine had six separate throttle bodies, four valves per cylinder and produced 277 PS (204 kW; 273 hp) in the street version, giving a top speed of 260 km/h (160 mph). Turbocharged racing versions were capable of producing around 850 hp (634 kW). BMW M1, BMW Museum, Munich, Germany. Rear view of one of the two BMW M1's located at the dealership in Nicosia. The M1 coupe was hand-built between 1978 and 1981 under the Motorsport division of BMW as a homologation special for sports car racing. The body was designed by Giugiaro, taking inspiration from the 1972 BMW Turbo show car. Originally, BMW commissioned Lamborghini to work out the details of the car's chassis, assemble prototypes and manufacture the vehicles, but Lamborghini's financial position meant that BMW reassumed control over the project in April 1978, after seven prototypes were built. Only 456 production M1s were built, making it one of BMW's rarest models. The spirit of the M1 lived on in the M635Csi and the first-generation M5, which shared the same (though slightly modified) engine. |

1M... 135i... Terra - I think you mean the 1M vs 135i. In Europe the 1M is called the "1er M Coupe". Basically the 1M has the M3 suspension and read LSD with a slightly more powerful(335 Hp vs 300 Hp) version of the N54 (twin turbo) engine. All 135i's come with the M sport optics(outside). M Sport packages for seats/trim/steering wheel/shadowline trim are optional. There are two Sport options for interior trim. Currently the 135i's use a N55 engine which has a single (dual scroll design) turbo. The N55 is a more economical and cheaper engine than the "stout" N54 engine for BMW to produce. N54's also seem to produce more HP "chipped" vs N55's. Dack

Yes! When I search for M1 this is the car that keeps coming up. The bumpers are clearly different than my 135i and the turn signal by the door is also different. Can you buy the M1 in the states? Would I be wrong by calling my 135i with the M sport package an M1? I went into the BMW dealership when I first got my car and I made the mistake of calling it an M1. The guy at the counter said," THAT is not an M1, you wouldn't have been able to afford an M1." Makes me want one....

The M-Sport package does not increase performance but is a trim level that includes shadow line trim, black headliner, sport seats, M steering wheel and shifter, M door sills, and the M-sport wheels. The 1M is a $70000 vehicle with a wider body, more power, better suspension and a bunch of other goodies. Only around 700 of them were brought into the US. That's not to say that your car isn't awesome, though. With a tune and some suspension bits you can have a car that's nearly as capable as a 1M. The 135i is a downright amazing car by its own right. |

Yes, the original car BMW made in the late 70's and early 80's was called a 1M. That is why BMW did not want to call the M version of the 135i an M1. BMW said they want this 1M name/label to remain special. That original 1M was a collaboration between BMW and Lambo, but BMW soon found out that the Italians could not deliver what they promised... and BMW took over the complete production of the 1M. At the time BMW had a hard time selling these 1M's so they went racing with them in the first "spec racer" before each F1 race. Now these old race cars are in high demand. Over one million dollar price tags are not unheard of! Btw... here are some pics of the race versions of the 1M. They were taken at BMW secret msueum aka BMW Classic in Munchen. The last three pics of the orange car(the paint fades to brown/black) is of the Turbo Concept, the predecessor to the 1M!

And btw... this 1M car you refer too... the headlights are US spec ones... just with a black film(foil) over the orange corner reflectors. The 1M does have a different eye brow LED lamp, but you can always replace your headlights IF you want that look. The doors are the same as on your 135i - its just the 1M has the M3 style mirrors and the lower side skirt if different. The 1M does have wider track than the 135i does. Its some 4cm wider at the front and back. You can really see how much wider the 1M fenders are flared in my photos I posted above. Dackel

Really do we have to compare these again, some needs to make a page dedicated to com pairing them.
Things the 1M has the 135i didn't : 3M chassis, suspension, control arms, axle, etc M3 LSD M3 brakes Lightened flywheel Upgraded and much improved cooling 19 inch rims, ps2 tires Able to fit 295 rubber Wide body kit Upgraded exhaust system 40 HP more 70 tq more And a bunch of other small things It goes completely differently, I had a 135i for 2 years, great car I really liked it and why I bought the 1m. The engine upgrades are the smallest part of the change. |

The 1M is a more track oriented type of car. It has the N54 engine which came in 08-10 models of the 135i but it has various other differences such as a wide body, lsd, wider track, etc. Yes you can make your 135i as fast as a 1M in a straight line very easily but if you want to out handle a 1M then that will become very expensive and not worth it at that point. |

But the car that he reckons you can't afford is the M1, and not the 1M. You might not find one even you can afford one.

[QUOTE=Dackelone;12370607]Only 740 1M's were sold in the states. They were all sold as 2011 model year models, while 135i's produced at the same BMW factory were labeled 2012 M.Y. cars. Some think this was done for EPA regulations - there has been much speculation about BMW's reasoning as to "why". BMW has produced around 7K 1M's for the world. We are still waiting to hear the official production number. Some say the car went out of production last month at Leipig Werk AG, but... we are still waiting for official confirmation.
Dackel, Really looking forward to your numbers once BMW gives out the production data. OP, its not an M1 or a 1M but a 135i M sport you have their. Either way its a great car, now just get out there and drive the wheels off it |

I think the confusion comes from the naming of the 1M. For anyone who is not in the BMW community, forums or know people who have knowledge of BMW cars would refer it as the M1 because of the popularity of the M3, M5, M6 names. All my friends refer the 1M as the M1 but of course they all own other brands of cars. The only unique naming of a M Car comes with the Z4M and the Mcoupe which were not mass produced and aren't as popular. I think Terra is referring to the 1M when asking the guy at the dealership and he was being sacarstic and referred to the M1 which is a vintage car back way when and at this day and age does cost a significant amount of money since its a collectors item/car. So lets give her a break. I think all the information previously provided for the 1M vs the 135i is good enough but if there are any other questions I think everyone is glad to answer them but lets stop with the 1M and M1 confusion..
Once the M2 comes out (the replacement for the so called 1M and 1 series) there will be alot less confusion in the naming of the M series cars. |

The 1M has a bit wider stance, more power due to the way the ECU logic is written, and LSD. |
