135i Snow tires question
Hey everyone!
SO I just moved to Colorado with my 135i and I'm having trouble finding reasonable snow tires. I have the "M" sport package on the car and am afraid that the brakes will be an issue if I go with a 17" wheel for the winter. I found a 17" snow wheel and tire package on tirerack.com but I'm not sure if it'll fit due to the brakes? Does anyone have any advise on this? Thanks~! If tirerack says it will fit, it will fit.

I've run 17s on mine for a few years. ASA GT1 with Dunlop 3D snows - best setup I've ever used.

"best setup I've ever used" wasn't descriptive enough? LOL My car is going back to BMW in a few weeks so my setup is up for sale. You're not too far away so you should consider it. I paid $1,450 from Tirerack two years ago and they were used for roughly 6k. Only had them on for about a month last year. They have TPMS and everything. Looking for $1,000. They have 2-3 more seasons on the tires, depending on miles traveled and the wheels are mint.
In all seriousness, I've used Blizzaks and Pirelli snows and they didn't even compare. The car just drives in the snow and they're still a performance oriented tire. Pic of my beast...

I purchased a set of refinished 18" Stock OEM wheels - the non M version. They were about $50 more per wheel than aftermarket wheels and I did not need to contend with spacers and the like that typically are involved with aftermarket wheels. Tire rack supplied the snow tires and TPM sensors. I did buy run flats which added to the tab. Not the inexpensive way to go but gave me some peace of mind. And in fact one of the run flats blew at night in the cold - not sure what I hit but I was able to get to a safe location and put on my spare.....Tire rack covered it as the road hazzard was still in effect.

I am so not looking forward to snow with my car.......
I'm going to have to learn how to drive this thing in two inches of snow....with snow tires! I wish I was running 17's instead of 18's on this car... |

Yeah, I'm buying 17's for this winter. Hopefully It'll be enough, I've never driven in snow. What I'm really worried about is the cloth top convertible. I bought this car when in GA not thinking I'd end up in CO. Got a sweet job so had to make the move now I'm worried about the top.

As far as traction is concerned, don't sweat it. The traction control on these cars is phenomenal. With a good set of snow tires I danced around FWD cars every winter and haven't missed a single day of work yet. The snow out here is over rated as well. Every year is different but typically the roads are completely covered in snow maybe 10-20 days of the year and when the sun comes out, it melts really fast. You will find yourself wishing you could swap in your summer tires half of the winter lol. BTW, is your job downtown? |

No I actually work in Brighton and live in Thornton. I plan on getting some good snow tires and a different set of wheels just for the winter. my car is so heavy that'll help too.

The car can handle snow - dont worry about it.
I like sharing these photos to scare other vert owners though The current set of winters - purchased on Tire Rack - like someone said earlier. If TR says it will fit, then it will fit. My sig pic shows how well the car deals with snow |

this makes me happy, everyone at work keeps saying things like I should trade for an x3 or x5 cause "no one in Colorado really drives those" (referring to my 135 vert) but I just can't do it lol I'm so in love with my 135 even 3 years later...
I"m going to treat the top with that solution BMW has for cloth tops. It essentially makes it "waterproof" keeping it in the garage may help some too I hope Thanks everyone for encouraging advice |
