Vented hoods bad for performance?

We run a modified Seibon hood. Vents are cut to make them functional. There are also additional seals around all four edges of our hood to seal out more air. The additional seals lift our hood up and some people that didn't know any better thought it was poor fitting.

The Vorstiener hood would also need to be modified to make the vent holes much larger. The Icarbon hood vents won't work entirely.

3D design has some nice venting but their hood is over $6K.

Seibon GTR hood = ~$800 + your time to modify vents.
Vorstiener = ~$1500? + your time to modify vents.
3D Design = $6000 + first born

Nicely done. And yes the 3D hood is insanely priced.

Have you seen the pricetag on these?

MSRP on the hoods is as follows:

Type 1 Cooling Bonnet:
VSDC - $5040.00
Carbon - $3500.00
FRP & Carbon - $2800.00

Type 2 Cooling Bonnet:
VSDC - $5880.00
Carbon - $4340.00
FRP & Carbon - $3640.00

These parts are by no means cheap, but the quality and craftsmanship of this caliber is what you are paying for.

The Vorsteiner needs to make the vent holes much larger to INCREASE cooling further...the vents as they are increase cooling over the stock hood, right??? I think we need to clarify that, lest someone think otherwise...In my track experience that was the case with the hood. Not knocking the Seibon of course, but I initially didn't go with them because of how the hood looked and some fitment issues a couple of people had. All in all I am happy to have had options to choose from.

Not to mention recommending that additional time and money need be spent on ALL hoods to "seal them up" n what not, except for the one that costs a 1/7th of what my entire car cost...

Hmm, youd think if this was really the case, these damn hoods being as expensive as they are would just be made correctly with proper vent holes, seals, yada yada. And maybe even throw in some 1 series specific installed hood pins while theyre at it as an option

THEN and only then may I actually consider ripping my hood off to replace with one of these..

PS.. Not to mention that the vents on the siebon look like theyre practically right overtop of the intake area. Yay for water n such things having an easy ride in thru my intake setup =( =(

That is why I posted what I posted...what Berk is saying mainly applies to dedicated racecars, not to your occasional HPDE and everday driving. For that the Vorsteineris fine as is, and I suspect the Seibon is as well (although I am not 100% sure their vents come from the factory already cut out)....

Yes that is correct. The Vorsteiner vents are functional as is, they are just very small. You are correct that it would give you cooling benefit over the OEM hood with zero vents.

I really think that Seibon is getting an undeserved bad rap. I have installed 2 hoods from them on my 135i and both fit very good to excellent. Yes you have to use washers to get the height exactly right but I've had to do the same thing for $$$$ hoods as well. The two layers of gaskets I have between the hood and fenders make it look like it fits worse than it would if it were a "street" install.

@Berk: Sorry wasn't trying to give Seibon a bad rep. For me it was MOSTLY a design thing that made me go the Vorsteiner route.
1. Vented from factory (regardless of how small)
2. Preferred the "look" of the Vorsteiner

The Seibon is however a perfectly acceptable alternative for those so inclined and it can function quite well as Berk Technology has proven with their bad-ass race car time and time again!

I was just not so learned about CF hoods back then, I figured why would the manufacturer make the hoods and sell them without hoods if they really needed them even in an everyday driving situation? But obviously its not that easy. But really I just dont see the real need for me to go with a hood unless I know its going to be perfect fitment and I can surely get pins installed without problem, etc. Also wtf will i do with my stock hood

The thing with carbon fibre hoods is that they are not a good mod for a street car. The fitment of a CFRP is never going to be as good as the OEM steel/aluminium part. It's just not.

CFRP hood is great if you race your car. You know the fitment isn't going to be OEM and that's OK. For a street car, there are lots of other higher priority mods.
