Yes during a snowstorm earlier this year I just backed my car 1/2 way out of the garage on a flat driveway and I had a tough time getting in back in. As is the car is scary/useless in any amount of snow.

These aren't snow tires but TireRack and customers couldn't say enough about how good they were in the snow.
Conti Extreme Contact DWS all seasons. I went with 235/40 18 all around. . |

Those DWS are dang good for A/S tires in the snow, I made it around Cleveland in my E46 for an entire season just fine...that said, they and nothing else compares to a dedicated winter tire...would/could never go back to A/S.

+1...There is no replacement for a dedicated snow tire. My 1 with snow tires griped the road better than my audi s4 with all seasons. Only reason I don't have snows for the audi yet is I'm waint to wear the tires that came on it before I do.

The problem with the all seasons is that they may only help you for about 1 season. As soon as the tread wears down you're doomed if you hit snow. I've gotten 3 seasons out of dedicated snows, though they were a bit dodgey in the end. My Alpins are on year 2 and they just went through a few inches of snow the other day with no problem.

Of course that depends on how many you miles you drive in a year. The Conti's are warranted for 50,000 miles. Considering I only put 5000 miles a year on the 135i, I think I'll get more like 6 years out of them running them year round. |

I noticed most of youse guys live in snow country. But what about us folks in moderate climates. I've run NCT5s year round since car was new but we really had no winter at all last year. But in a normal winter we will get maybe 5- 6 days of ice or snow. I'm not gonna run dedicated snows tyres for just 3 or 4 days but maybe will switch to the Contis AS whennew tyres are needed.

I have Blizzak snow tires on my 1er but the car is still terrible in the snow. Slips all the time, has a hard time driving off in any kind of ice or slush, goes apeshit around slippery corners. The Blizzaks are run-flats, could that be why? Just crappy traction in general.

Ditto the Falken Eurowinters; they've worked as expected for me. I also shared the originally stated experience in snow. Having never driven a car that really did require winter tires, that was a shocking moment - I had always relied on the slow down, etc.

The Conti DWS have a cool feature on the actual tire threads there is a DWS embedded in the thread and once the thread gets used up the S symbol gets removed meaning the tire is only capable of driving in Dry or Wet weather then the W and so on..
I had these tires on my 2001 540iA sport pack and they performed decent in 3 inches of snow, they have ridges in them to capture snow because snow sticks better to snow. For the money they are great tires. |

I'm running 225/40/18 Blizzaks all the way around on my stock rims. Made it from St. John's, NL Canada, to Toronto, Ontario the end of Dec 2012. (135i coupe) Was snowing like crazy, no real problems.
