Funny you say that. I don't have $10,000 in my M Coupe. It has OEM Wheels, RS3s, Front Swaybar, Rouge Diablo Exhaust, PFC 06s on stock calipers and rotors (oh my!), and a ZHP Shift Knob and track time. I think it does just fine: Oh, and my cheap set-up still performing well against a crowd of 100+ drivers. Don't need $3k brakes to stop a car |

And btw to kgolf31, I'm going with carbotech pads since I was reading some decent reviews on them and they offer the pads for a 128, both street pads and combo pads and full race pads.

YES, you don't need $3k brakes, at least not in a parking lot you don't....my BMW performance fronts were only $1400.....

I can upgrade the dampers to DAs or similar, but I can't justify spending $2k on shocks right now. It has the S54. I also run on airports...and track. |

BBK noob here with a question: I thought that the major advantage of a "BBK" was heat dissipation, therefore you get a more consistent pedal feel after lots of hard breaking (less fade?), not necessarily harder breaking. Obviously there may be some exceptions, but in general is this a correct assumption?

Typically though, unless you're doing Time Trials, Wheel to Wheel Racing...or some other sort of competitive driving on the track...full blown race pads on stock calipers/rotors are sufficient. You basically have a larger rotor/pad with a BBK, thus you get more thermal mass to dissipate heat. |

there was a fairly large thread on a brake limp mode supposedly caused by an algorithmic calculation involving parameters like speed, brake pressure... etc, I wonder if a BBK would effect the limp mode ... just wondering

I think I took a read on that thread. Not sure if anyone has since tried installing a BBK and seeing if the limp mode still kicks in after a while. But something tells me that it would since it's based on speed, brake pressure, etc. There's not a single temperature indicator that could change what the computer thinks is happening.

Here's a thought for you guys:
If the 135i/BMW Performance brakes are so great, why did BMW specifically not use them on their top performance spec car of the segment, the 1M? Arguably that is the car most setup to be pushed from the factory.

They wanted the best brakes that would fit on that car, so they used M3 brakes, 14.2 front, 13.8 rear. They knew they'd be running 19" wheels...BMW, like me, thinks a wheel should be stuffed with rotor...the 13.3 rotor would look too small with a 19. Think about the torque advantage with a 14" rotor over a 13" rotor...huge...now think about the torque advantage over an 11" rotor. Stupendous! Actually, I looked at the 14.2 setup but nixed it for 2 reasons: I didn't want to use 19" wheels, and that setup uses a 2-piston cast-iron sliding caliper...that's a no-no on the front of one of my cars...

335i brakes are in my book the best option due to...
1. Cheap 2. Out brake the 6 piston setup in the 135i 3. Fill the 18in very nicely 4. Even the caliper looks nice and purposeful, more so than the 345mm ZHP/CSL E46 ones. |

I agree, for a larger caliper & rotor upgrade, not quite a true pro BBK, this is a good method. It was on my list when I found my 135i brake kit for less.

That's real nice, StG, but that's the rear wheel...
Here's a shot of the 1M's front wheel with it's big 14.2" rotor....a 13" rotor would look small, and the 11" 128i rotor would look pitiful.
