I just noticed yesterday that mine has several cracks in it but it is still holding up and on. Wonder if the dealer will give me crap since they're just cracks.

never an issue. Mine is a 2011, and the first replacement was done in 11, the second in 12 and is so far so good. |

2009 128i here. Noticed cracks when I first bought it (pre-owned) last summer, dealer covered the replacement under original warranty and replaced with updated part. It had not been replaced in the past. Haven't had a problem since, even after driving frequently in -10C to -20C weather here in Canada and frequent temperature fluctuations.

I just traded in my '08 128i for an '09 128i. The '08 had the third brake light lens repaired before I got her but the '09 had the cracked lens the night that I took ownership. I take her in tomorrow morning to have it repaired.

Just had my 08 135 convertible in for its final in warranty service. There were so many things that needed to be addressed that I didn't even notice the giant crack in my third brake light. Sigh.
Had to fight with the dealer to get the spark plugs changed as part of the 3rd oil service, even though my service manual clearly states they are not tied to the CBS at all (SA initially claimed they didn't need to be changed until 100K). Have had ongoing battery problems since the car was brand-new from it sitting on the lot in Pennsylvania for 10 months without being driven or charged that have been blamed on my driving habits and remain unsettled. And had to deal with the squealing front brake issue again, which they thankfully did resolve with new pads and rotors. Facing the prospect of a big bill for brake work, a labor intensive weekend changing plugs, and an impending need for a new $400+ battery, the 3rd brake light literally slipped through the cracks of my mind. As did the 12v outlet in the center console that hasn't functioned at all since the car was new. The service advisor was kind enough to tell me about the stress cracks in both rear rims, which are causing slow leaks in both rear tires and will require replacement in very short order. The car is going back next week to get these unresolved issues addressed, along with the added bonus of having part of the wiring harness cut up to ensure it doesn't go from original recipe to extra crispy at some point. It will be the car's 17th trip to the dealer in the four years I've had it if memory serves. Warranty issue or not, I have no qualms whatsoever about asking them to replace a part that has not only been previous replaced at least once on my car, but that stems from an issue that was obviously not resolved until recently, if at all. If past experience is any guide, I expect the conversation will be interesting to say the least... |

I'm on my first but I don't know if it's been replaced before (2008) since I just got it in June 2013. There is a crack in it, but it is in an area that is not visible. If it gets any worse, then I'll just buy a new one.

Mine was cracked for years and then one day last month, half of the red lens fell off. I just ordered one online and replaced it myself. I did have to modify the light to make it fit since the design of the light changed. You can either grind off the tab on the car or make a slot in the light.

I would feel more comfortable making a slot on the light. Where did you buy your light? Both cars out of warranty, thanks

Someone told me that when you close your trunk don't close it by putting your hand on top of the trunk but by the license plate area... I don't know if it works but I do it anyways.
