Buying with a rebuilt title???
So I found this awesome 135i with only 47,000 miles and jb4, meth kit, full exhaust and coilovers. I talked the guy down to $12,000 but the only problem with the car is it has a rebuilt title, I looked at the car fax and the damage was very minor (just hood, bumper and headlight replaced) and I was wondering if this is a good deal for me considering I could want to continue modding the car or does the title kill the value too much?
Heres the CL link:https://houston.craigslist.org/cto/5595188688.html |

The body IS the frame, plus car has heavy mods. Pass. There's a reason that car's cheap, and it's not because the title is now a different color.
Carfax is also wrong about stuff all the time so don't take what it says was replaced as gospel. |

Yes your right the body is the frame but the hood and fender and bumper isnt considered "heavy damage" due to the fact its easily repair able and replaceable. When one said frame damage is more among the lines of door pilars quarter panels roof trunk ect. 2nd now your stating heavy mods and deterring away from the damage into maintenance and reliability of the previous owner. If the car is local i see no reason why not just get a mech buddy to check out the car or if the guy is willing to you can take it to the dealer and do a full diagnosis for $150 just to put your suspicions to bed.

Bring jack and stands. Inspect front and rear crash structures, frame rails upper and lower (front) and rear rails, rear floor pan, etc.
Know that since it's salvaged title, it's resale value is near nil if you're inclined to sell it in the near future. Would make a decent base for a race car, if you're so inclined.

The dude who gave you this input owns a used car dealership, so he's not screwed if every once in a while a car turns out to be a lemon or has more damage than it first seems. In your case it would probably be a massive hassle to buy a car then find out it has more issues than you thought. Trust me, man, unless you have your own shop or are at the very least a competent mechanic there are no "deals" on cars.

LMFAO, just looked at the CL link and that car's in New Orleans. Have you ever heard of flood damage?

ANYWAY, my point is, the car still has a clean, blue title and all this was done thru insurance. The car in the ad has been through some SHIT, end of story. |

I've had 3 salvaged BMW's (2 were 135's). I work with cars all the time. To find the value of the car you take the KBB value of the car and subtract $2k. The value of the car is NOT nil... ask for pictures of the car from the accident. Most cars on the road today have been in an accident but not salvaged because the owner did not get it repaired through the insurance company. My cars run perfectly fine. My e46 now has 155k on it five years later.

if you are confident that it was only minor damage and do not care about resale value - go for it. the car's low price already reflects the title and at that cheap, who cares?

Thats how I feel. Other than the damage from the accident what are some things or problems to keep an eye out for when buying a 135i

12,000 dollar is a completely ripoff. That's not even remotely close to "cheap". It's a 2008 for chrissakes. Go lookup the price on anything - KBB, Nada, Edmunds - guide value on that car for private party is roughly 12,500 *IF* it was clean. It's not.
Tack on the fact that this car has a rebuilt title, and has been modified? "talking him down to 12k" is nothing. He can't put a car with a rebuilt title at the same price point as one with a clean title and expect to get a buyer, unless you're a sucker. That car is not worth more than $9k on a good day. Don't waste your time or money on this unless the seller is willing to come down to what the car is actually worth.

Just for reference, I just purchased a one owner/no accident 2008 135i Convertible for $9900. However, it was high mileage (130K), but is in excellent shape and runs like a raped ape.
I am loving this little car. Reminds me of my E36, but with a lot more power. Last edited by dman928; 04-20-2018 at 07:36 PM.. |

Some girl reversed in to my car and caused 17k in damage. Headlights etc sensors galore radiator blah blah blah. I not only had her insurance pay for it but I filed a diminished value claim and received an additional 4K from her insurance but the car value is dirt now. She was fixed and runs like a rocket ship though.

$12K is a lot of money for any car with cosmetic or worse damage. Add $10K to it and you'd probably be able to find a clean late model 135i. However, $10K won't buy you a lot of body work if the car turns out to have significant damage.
If I suspected frame damage, I'd have the car put on a frame alignment rack. Check with a local body shop. Sometimes they can spot problems by eye. BTW, I wouldn't trust anything from CarFax. |
