Any experience with 13-14 ML550 and/or 14-15 Cayenne/Macan?
Was looking at sedans but these 3 SUVs crossed my mind and I am now looking at them as well. Any long term experience, reliability issues? I am guessing Porsche is more reliable but probably more expensive to fix as well. I also know that base VW V6s are the most reliable but too slow for me. So I was mainly considering last years of Cayenne S V8 or perhaps its best to get the new V6T?
My other option is 2015-2018 Audi S4 DSG + maybe do Stage 1 on it and save some money towards repair costs. I just think Cayenne S, especially the redesigned 15 model is a bit more special..... Also is Macan the same size as X2? Because I drove X2 and its ridiculously small for a 4-door SUV Last edited by Kolyan2k; 08-01-2018 at 10:43 AM.. |

Macan is a great car, much better than X2 which I sat in but did not drive. I have driven the X1 for a few days and hated it. The first gen Cayenne is a maintenance nightmare, second gen comparatively bullet proof. Check out the new X3 M40 or whatever the hell it is.
If you want drivers car at that price point the Macan S is best from what you listed from the SUV / CUV camp. If you want cheap fun the first gen X1 xDrive35 with the big engine is a blast. You can get a really nice certified one for $25K-ish, have warranty and maintenance through 100K and take it to Dinan and turn it into a rocket ship.

My boss has a 16' Cayanne S, it's his second and the first one was a 2011 that he put about 60k on and other than a tail light going out on the 2011 they have both been trouble free and they see some serious mileage and teenager abuse. His 2016 has about 35k on it now.
His oldest daughter has a 2016 Macan S and it too has been very reliable. There was a recall for a charge pipe but other than that it has been good and it has been driven from USC in LA to San Antonio, Texas a few times. He also owns a 2009 Panamera S that has also been trouble free. Oh and he is a Mercedes guy really and having owned 20 or so that I can recall (GLE AMG, S550, and SLS AMG currently), they have all been very reliable as well. I have had a lot of friends with Audi's and they seem to be a more like BMW and more problematic.

If you're going down this road you should look at the Jag as well, I drove the big engine one and it was great.

Also consider the Range Rover Velar.

Macan has excellent build quality, best interior, best aerodynamics, and most importantly a properly engineered motor. It's the only one that comes with a dry sump (cayenne too). As a bonus I think it has a slightly better turning radius.
Those other cars are all crap in comparison. |

Range Rovers are nice but they are last in reliability among like all car manufacturers
I'd consider Panamera too. I am trying to find a deal, don't really care which Porsche it is, I like them all. Probably gonna be my last nice car in this life. I aint rich enough and I have a newborn, and on top of it I am an underemployed babysitter for the next year. And yes I know its not a wise purchase Last edited by Kolyan2k; 08-02-2018 at 09:26 AM.. |

Had a 15 Macan for about a year. It was sort of a stop gap buy after I transitioned out of the E90M3 and I was still unsure if I wanted the Fx M3. The 15 had some small minor gripes (weeping rear wiper IIRC) but nothing major. You might want to check out Macan forum to see what the latest reports on reliability are.

Macan's are pretty good - both in terms of reliability and drive feel. It almost feels like a car to drive, not an SUV.
I had a loaner Cayenne when my Macan was in for a service - I hated it so much that I couldn't wait to give it back. The Macan is bigger than the X2. Interior wise, the SQ5 is a bit larger inside (more rear headroom). |

I have a 2012 Cayenne base and am very happy with it. I've driven a 2016 Cayenne S, but not long enough to have a valuable comparison with mine. Aside from engines, 958.1 vs 958.2 changes were minimal design changes. I have driven a couple new Macans and like them very much; they are certainly more fun to drive than a Cayenne and as others have said, more like driving a car than a SUV. They are two very different, very nice vehicles. I already had my Z4M when I bought my Cayenne, so my fun car needs were met and I was looking for a full-size SUV. I recommend you consider what you want out of a SUV and at least sit in both a Cayenne and Macan to get a feel for the size difference.
"I am guessing Porsche is more reliable but probably more expensive to fix as well." This has been my experience, yes reliable, yes expensive to maintain. |

So I am guessing V6T is more reliable then previous gen NA V8? And what about 3.0l Diesel?
At first I was only looking at Macan, I like that it has performance of sedan but at the same time I like design of Cayenne, practicality is future proof (X2 trunk was smaller then 2-series lol). I also haven't seen a single guy driving Macan.....word on the net its kinda a chick car |

I've read the Macan forum(s) and seen the issues (cracking black side plastic panel, carplay, rattle/trim, etc. etc. etc.). I honestly think that a) we are seeing the issues of a small percentage of owners vs. the total population (common Internet car forum situation), and b) that if you get your car from a reputable dealer and it's not a dealer demo, used car, or the one sitting on the lot for 2 years, you'll be OK. High-volume, quality dealers don't let cars go out with issues if they can help it. Their inspection processes should catch and fix them before they get into our (the buyers) hands. At least they should. But remember some of these people are buying from dealers that only have 2 Macans on the lot or get only a handful a year, so the dealer pushes them out ASAP in order to get more on the floor for sale or save on their own financing costs. Anyway, all cars are good yet have issues; like gambling, you're rarely going to be able to beat the system - get what you want! |

Well I am buying used with some miles and the first 2015 year. New is not an option for me. There is a guy with almost 100k miles on his Macan and claims he had zero issues besides 2 recalls.
My guess would be Cayenne has same reliability as Macan if not better due to Japanese 8-speed vs VW DSG in Macan Last edited by Kolyan2k; 08-07-2018 at 12:19 PM.. |
