PS2 Alternatives
First of all, i love the PS2's and they have been my favorite tire so far. But i'm done spending $1,300 everytime i need a new set of tires. What suggestions do you guys have for a good alternative? Even something that is $275 per tire is better that $330. Ride and noise comfort is as important as performance and handling. That is why i loved the PS2 but i have to imagine there is something else out there.

I've been very pleased with the Goodyear F1 GS-D3s on my Miata and intend to put them on the 135 when my stock tires wear out. Unless the PS2's are on some sort of insane sale at the time, that is. The Goodyears are significantly cheaper.

I have been looking at the F1 Asymmetric, F1 DS-G3, and RE760. Those F1 Asymmetric got really good reviews on Tire Rack. I'd need to see some more reviews, though.

They were really loud the time I accidentally put them on backwards coming home from an autocross.

how has nobody mentioned the Toyo T1-R? it's on par with the PS2 with respect to performance, and is probably 1/2 the price. edgeracing.com sells them pretty cheap.

I had both PS2s and the newer contisportcontact3s on my e46. The PS2s are still the best tire out there, but the Contact3s were damn good too, very close to the PS2s in every respect, in my opinion. I suggest giving them a try!

Obviously, the UHPs suck, but I was disappointed in the F1s compared to the Nittos. The PS2s were tops for sure... |

the contis are a fine daily driver tire, but true "max perf" tires need to handle heat a lot better than they do. the toyos hold up much better under heat, and dont drop off nearly as much. the initial level of grip seems higher to me as well.

Oddly enough, at the same time, I find they're also not very progressive at the limit and will give up with little warning. The R is better than the older S in this respect. From C&D's 2005 tire test, the summary of the T1-R "In fact, the Proxes never placed higher than eighth in any test, and in two dry tests, the autocross and the skidpad, the Toyo finished last, trailing the top finishers by significant margins. In some tests it felt better than it actually was performing, but overall, Geswein noted it was "soft and imprecise" and didn't "feel like a sport tire." In the end, the Toyo has its high wear grade (280) and attractive price ($135) to thank for its eighth-place finish. In performance terms, there are lots of tires that do better." http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...omparison_test Caveat emptor.

I would neither call them quiet or noisy--they are kinda in between. Certainly, they are tolerable. I"m 37 and done blasting stereos and such and they never were too obtuse until they got down to about 7/8-32...
