The thermostat is a separate part from the water pump. It too will fail in time. So... everyone just replaces both as a set. You will also need new water pump bolts(bc they are Alu and are a one time use bolts). I would also replace the "elbow" coolant hose and any other hoses on your car that show signs of cracking or are hard to the "touch" when you squeeze them. Don't forget to use only BMW approved coolant too.

Previously voted so I cant again. Waterpump failure @ 61,815 miles(2010 CPO). Had the car towed to the dealer. I told my SA twice that the boost seemed off and asked them if they could push the car hard while test driving it. They said they will. SA said the car was fine, come pick it up. Took a Uber there (1 hr away) only to pull off the lot to discover the boost was still not right and the half engine light came on. Had to wait 45 minutes for a loaner and drive home another hour. Should I ask the dealership to replace the thermostat?

Half asleep while doing paperwork and posting... I guess I should have asked them prior to putting the waterpump in.

Has anyone seen a correlation between pump failures and power mods? I'm wondering if the addition of power and the extra heat caused may be the trigger for pumps failing at 60,000 miles instead of 100,000+ miles.

Word to the wise... KEEP your receipts(!), my friend was not aware that even when you buy just a part from any BMW dealer... THAT part will have a two year warranty. He could have gotten his replacement pump for free... had he kept his receipt. Dackel

I see some pumps that look like they have metal impeller housings and then the OE BMW pump that looks like it is a plastic impeller housing. Has anyone taken a pump apart to look at the housing and impeller? What is it that is specifically failing? Might an OEM fully metal part be better than the plastic OE BMW part?
I'm just thinking that maybe an OEM part might actually last longer than the original BMW pump. |

What we do know is the pumps do fail without notice! So its prudent to replace the pump AND thermostat before they fail. Dackel

I lucked out from having to replace my pump. Looks like one of my 12v constant pwr cables decided to ground out and it came out to be the cable that comes form the junction box above the battery. Inside that box there is a "blade" that has fuses ranging from 250AMP/80AMP x 2/100AMP x2> The 100 amp one that provides 12V constant to the pump popped the fuse and luckily did not damage my pump. Better to pay $45 bucks than have to pay over 350$ for a new pump
