DIY Request - removing rear weight

i have a solution... take the ballast off and drive with the top down all the time. That will keep the weight at the back of the car!

Not a myth according to BMW's own technical and training guide, that clearly states (on page 13):

Quote:

The 135i is equipped with a trim weight on the rear bumper. This component contributes to an overall improvement in axle-load distribution.

given I wasnt looking for it, I dont recall seeing anything like THAT under my car. I do remember watching horsepower or musclecar or one of those other car enthusiast shows and recall seeing something exactly like that in the TRUNK of the car and it was filled with something... Dont exactly remember why but I think it was in a 69 firebird convertible

well, according to realoem, its a 10.150kg weight that is held by 2 bolts at the back support bar
funny how it goes there, with some lightweight parts upfront, i think this could be removed safely

Did you remove that weight? Accessible without removing ream bumper?

Installed a trailer hitch today and my 10 135i coupe had no ballast weight bolted to the bumper. Here are photos of both sides of the bumper.

About a month ago I did the same on my 2012 and there was nothing there. :/

In my modest attempt to shave weight I was justifying the hitch by removing the ballast. Well, rumored ballast. If anybody has a definitive answer to which models have the ballast (e.g. convertible, non-US spec, etc) please speak up for the other users here who may spend an hour plus getting that GD bumper cover off just to find a seamless slab of steel.

PS I didn't break any tabs but it took forever

PSS if it took you like 10 min to get your bumper cover off without breaking tabs I hate you

I don't have one either and the steel bumper isn't that heavy. Also with easy areas like the battery and rear seats you need to remove weight from the front where easy savings are much harder to come by. Or the car will get lighter but unbalanced, which will make it faster but the handling will suffer.
