I used to use Castrol 5- 30W in the rex.
But now I do lots of short distance drives (1km) which never allow the car to reach normal operating temp. So I prefer to use the Mobile 1 (0-40) being every so slightly thinner for start ups. |

This is the German Castrol oil I use in my 135i. German Castrol EDGE FORMULA RS 0W-40 it is rated "BMW LL-4".
This is the cheapest place in Germany to buy it from. Thanks to another 1addicts member who told me about this place/e-shop. http://www.ebay.de/itm/ws/eBayISAPI....=STRK:MEWNX:IT here is there "other" website... http://www.oeldepot24.de/catalog/pro...products_id=78 I also found this website. They sell ALL the special BMW oils. Their prices aren't bad either. One interesting thing is this website says that BMW LL-4 is backwards compatiable with LL-1, but LL-1 can not be used where BMW LL-4 is called for! http://www.oelwelt24.de/catalog/Moto...+Longlife+Oele Dackel Last edited by Dackelone; 09-17-2011 at 09:45 AM.. |

I believe the same diff oil used for the manual cars: Castrol SAF-XJ is backwards campatibe for all BMW cars, including M models. Its actually designed to be used in the M Diffs, but it can also be used in the non M cars. Its what I am using in my 135i (6MT) diff. http://www.oelwelt24.de/catalog/Getr...chse+%2B+Sperr |

That's right Edwin
5W-30 is $59.99 5W-40 is $63.99 Still seems like good value compared to what I've seen at other stores. I'm switching to 0W-40 next time. When I see it on special I'll be stocking up on it for sure, so if anybody sees it cheap let me know |

Thanks for letting me know Tim. I did a bit of googling on it last night. It's 10% and they had a special offer of 20% last month. I might give RACQ a ring in the next few days and find out all the details though

Repco has Castrol Edge 5W-30 in 5L bottles for sale at $47.99 ($22 saving). This weekend only.
I have switched to CE 0W-40 but I know a few guys are still running the 5W-30. |

Castrol BMW approved or not
Castrol oil that's not BMW approved. Castrol Edge is not all the same.
The oil that we use in the N series engines is not the same as the stuff you purchase from Autobarn or SCA. you can not purchase the BMW specific Castrol 5/30 LLO1 in anything less than a 20ltr tin. Just like the M3 BMW 10/60 this oil is not the same as the Edge 10/60 you purchase from the local auto parts shop. If you really want to change your own oil and want the hassle of dumping the old stuff, having the car fall on your head, and having a mess on your garage floor, Advan will sell you a 20ltr tin of the real deal Castrol gold for a good price, you can choose the 10/60 M3 or the 5/30 for the N series engined cars. Pick up only from our Sydney shop. PM me for a price SORRY NO SHIPPING Just a note, i had a long discussion with the Sydney Castrol rep i asked him to ask the tech at Castrol if i could use the M3 10/60 oil in the N54 engine with mods + 300kw I was told YES it would be a great upgrade for the track day guys. |

By memory it was $20 per L there is no way I would buy it that way but it appears it doesnt just come in 20L quantities? May I ask of your opinion of running the mobil 1 0W40 or a 0W30 in a N54? |

With regards to BMW approved oil, I'm not sure what the real differences are. I do know that 2 of the main dealers up here use Shell Helix Ultra when the engine oil cover on our engines specifically says that it's designed for Castrol Edge oil Regardless, I'm happy with the new formula of Castrol Edge oil that I can buy over the counter, car seems to respond very well to it. Ian is right, it's not cheap, retails for around $90 up here. I usually buy a few if I see it on sale. |
