Right now I am saying yes, even though it is pricey (probably around $2K) and every article ever written has bashed it.
I'm assuming it will be very close to the version in the 335, so I will be sure and take that for a 'test drive.' I mean really, is it THAT bad? |

Most of the bashing has to do with the interface. BMW engineers think they know better than the consumer how the system should work. Maybe so, but they desperately need some human factors experts to help them with the UI. Japanese offerings aren't perfect either but they're certainly more intuitive, something which BMW is going to have to suck up and "stoop to" sooner or later (much like cupholders). Again, if you need nav there are better aftermarket solutions. |

Don't have it on my bimmer but I've driven a couple (3&5) that had it.
+ ...it's easier to use than anyone has said in print. Like I say, if you can master using an i-Pod you'll have no trouble with I-drive. - ...the graphics are awful...so bad that I at first thought "no, this can't be it-it's still loading." Nope. Compare to any Japanese manufacturer and this is stone-age stuff. Not worth the price. Sorely in need of a complete update. |

I have all of my fingers, and most of my brain, so I really see no use for the damn thing. I'd rather put the $$ to sways, short shift, or summer tires/rims.

Here's a (probably slanted ; -) writeup of iDrive at the BMWCCA site:

i wish i could waste about 2 grand...
so that i would know where the winding roads are ahead...in advance... maximize the speed...minimizes the skid... but i still believe BMW iDrive interface is pretty much useless... because BMW side with Microsoft CE OS and that unsnappy knob... i wish that iDrive has multi-touch interface like iPhone... or atleast ... Microsoft's new technology 'Surface'... 1 series coupe will be equipped with new featured iDrive... so called...pre programmable memory keys...like this in new X5 |

I'll be new to BMW so forgive me if this is common knowledge but can the system be modified to play DVD's a la Infiniti?

Do you know if that feature works for each of the two keys you are given? Much like my E46 M3 where each key knows the seat and mirror settings for that driver?

Definitely getting it. The screen is much less obtrusive than in the 335 and it can be retracted in the dash when not in use. Plus as others have noted it facilitates the I-pod use.
Lets face it, the people that have bashed it only drive the car for a few days then write a review. Sure it could be more intuitive, so could Microsoft stuff. After a week you won't think twice, after a month it will be intuitive. Voice comands are also part of the package, what could be hard about that? Ok I admit my cell phone voice comands do nothing but piss me off and make me look like I'm having an arguement with myself. But I have seen the I-Drive system demonstrated in a 5, and it worked well. It should be priced at $1K like the better Japanese systems though, so it does make me cringe a bit. |
