New to us 135i Cabriolet
Hello, new to this forum but not BMW's. Late last summer my wife and I picked up a 2013 135i Cabriolet in Reading, PA. It was a one owner car with 3,678 miles. We put a few thousand more on it before garaging it for the winter. I've owned a few other BMWs over the years; E9x sedan, f30 335i and now an f22 M240i xDrive, I have modified my cars in the past but the plan is to do nothing to this car but drive and maintain it.

Welcome. I'm not too far in Chester Springs. I have an '11 white manual 135 'vert that I daily drive. I've put 130k miles on mine. It is a wonderful little car. If you have any questions, shoot me a pm.

Really depends on maintenance. I bought mine at 50,000 mi and most maintenance was not well documented, but I knew the major things that had been done in the last 5000 mi.
Except for water pump at 70,000 and windshield washer tank at 65,000, it has be great and I am well pleased with it. |

Are there any warranties that would back the problems of the n54? |

Oh Ok. You haven’t bought it yet? It Depends on the maintenance history of the car TBH. Do your research the best you can. Ive always wanted an 335 ever since I bought my 330i back in 06. Evem more when the 135 came out. I know N54 require more maintenance for sure. When I bought mine I bit the bullet since I got a great deal. I had to rebuilt the tranny and supspension. I can tell you I really enjoy driving it especially with tye top down. ☝️😎.

I’ll have to check out the service history of that 135- it’s being sold by BMW so perhaps they have a good example if they are offering it for sale at their dealership. |

It is true there will be significant maintenance expenses; however, these engines at their core are very robust and reliable. Once you sort out the maintenance it should be good for another 70,000-100,000 miles. The question is how much are you willing to spend to hold the privilege of owning a relatively rare sports coupe/cabriolet? For perspective, I just helped my nephew pay for general maintenance repairs on his 2011 Ford Fusion Sport AWD with the 3.5L. Water pump and radiator replacement along with alignment, brakes, and replacement of trans cooler lines cost just under $4k. And that is with my substantial dealer discount! Any car can have expensive repairs, but what would you rather drive??? |

It’s an interesting decision process. I just sold a Porsche 911 that was starting to become more of a project than a weekend cruiser. I exited realizing the 997 era will be a collector status. Yet- my enjoyment of the car started to wane mostly due to it not feeling comfortable anymore. I’ve driven the m240i Xdrive and it’s new tech and warranty are appealing. But it doesn’t look nearly as good as this 135i manual. In general I’m not sure what to do next… |

Close to pulling the trigger.
Would an extended warranty make sense or just save money until n54 acts up? What are the common failures? Is there even a warranty out there that would cover it? |

There is a lot you can search regarding the common issues for N54. I wouldn’t get the extended warranty. Those warranty companies always try not to pay for claims.

Looks nice, is that a non M-Sport car?
I’ve never had much luck with warranty companies personally, but I know others that have. The BMW dealer I work for sells a lot of warranty products and I know they cover claims in our service department. If I had bought a warranty on my car, in theory that would have saved me money, though it wasn’t a cheap quote. I think it was over $4k for just a few years. Turbo waste gates will fail before 100k, various sensors will need to be replaced (fairly simple), most engine gaskets will leak, headlight washer seals will leak and cause you to think it is coolant, fuel pump if it hasn’t already been fixed, injectors if they haven’t been fixed, water pump and thermostat will fail. But like I said, once sorted, it will be a good car for a long time. If it is very low mileage, I would be too concerned and just budget for maintenance down the road. |

I think back over the past 15+ years I’ve owned my E88 135 6M Sport, and I don’t have the sense that it has been an expensive car to maintain. I’m a firm believer in driving a car is the best thing for its longevity. That said, I think it is a tough risk/reward evaluation to pursue a used low mileage older 135. (For the first time in 40 years I did purchase a used (CPO) vehicle, and I found it a much harder decision than buying new!)
