Jerk while shifting gears on 6MT
Hello all,
After owning the car for ~6months my patience has worn out.I have realized that the car seems to jerk every time I shift from 1-2,2-3 etc. The jerk becomes faint as I reach the 4th gear. I have been a manual driver all my life and I feel like an ass in this car with passengers wondering if i ever drove a stick.I usually shift at 2-3k and the problem persists even when the engine isn't cold. The only way to prevent is to release the clutch pedal sloooooowlyyyyy. Am I doing something wrong here?I don't want to broach the topic with the dealer [ i stay 2 hrs away from the nearest dealer] and don't prefer to make the trip if this is to do with my driving or if the problem cannot be fixed. Get the CDV (Clutch Delay Valve) removed, it restricts the clutch hydraulics.
Do a simple search, this should help a lot. Also, look up "Clutch Stop", it will help smooth out your shifts as our clutch throws are fairly long and engagement seems to start right about half way without one. |

How many miles do you have on your car? I had the same thing for around first 10k miles (had to really focus in order to shift without jerking) but after that shifting became smooth. I guess it's a part of a break-in period...

I had the same problem and mitigated (but by no means solved) it with a clutch stop. The CDV delete is too permanent for me, especially on a lease, so I popped in the clutch stop, and the physicality of the shorter throw reduced the jerkiness. I recommend it.

I too found this annoying. I haven't done the CDV delete but I noticed that when I had my software update done about 2 weeks ago it changed the shift mannerizims quite a bit. Before I'd have to shift slow or it would snap. Now It's about 10x smoother. Have you gotten your software update? I'm in a 2011/N55/6MT.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one. I've driven a stick all my life too & was starting to wonder if my driving skills had regressed!
I agree re: CDV delete being a bit permanent for a lease. I've just given in and shift more slowly. I have to say, the clutch is really nice and strong; I love how it grabs with such confidence under all that torque, though I don't really like having to be so slow...

+1 on teh cdv...had the same thing you described and it was totally solved by the 2 seconds it takes to pop out the restrictor. For those on leases, don't even second guess it, remove it. Your dealer will never know!

Problem exists between the steering wheel and the driver seat learn how to properly drive your car. All that "remove the CDV" non-sense is useless...the only thing it will do for you is provide quicker engagement, otherwise the jerking will still be there if you can't shift properly.

The jerking will NOT be there anymore, once your CDV is gone. You will really wonder why you have been driving so long with that darn CDV in there! Yes, you can drive around the CDV to some extent.. but for me the 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd shifts are sooo much sweeter now that the CDV is gone. As to any cons... well.. there have been a few guys who have snapped off the bleed screw when they were bleeding thier clutch slave. IF that happens I believe you need to buy a new slave cylinder for $70 in order to get that bleed screw. BMW doesn't see it separately. Other than that there is no cons. Dackel |

I drive my car perfectly, 0 "jerking", and even while wearing flip flops. I invite you for a ride if you ever visit where I live. Do you really think BMW engineered a car with the intentions of having the drivers removing parts?!

The 1 to 2 shift can be a bit jerky if you aren't paying attention. In this trans the 1-2 shift does need a bit of finesse. It's not as quick and precise of a manual trans as I've found on Honda/Acura, and some Mazda's. Even my previous A4 and 325i had an easier 1-2 shift. This trans, like most BMW MT's, take a bit of adjusting your MT technique. There is a good bit of free/dead space in the clutch pedal travel, but once you feel it out it works just fine. A clutch stop helps to effectively remove the unnecessary travel. I can see how the CDV removal can help as it removes the flow restriction, but that's only going to help to speed up the clutch engagement for when you are shifting faster and driving harder. Still I manage to drive fast and shift fast just fine with the CDV in place. The 1-2 shift is the only gear change that could be a bit better, and I can see where the CDV removal would help. Other than that, if someone is getting jerky take offs and shifts all the way to 4th, I say either look for a problem in the system, or in your shift technique. This isn't the greatest manual I've driven, but it's far from being as bad as some posters experience. You can't just dump the clutch on every shift when driving normally and expect it to work butter smooth. It's a driver operated clutch and it requires the driver to modulate the clutch as needed. It's not an on/off switch. Plus, of all the reviews of this MT 135i and other MT BMW's, I haven't read any negative reviews about the manual trans being bad or jerky. If some of you have managed to 'glaze' the clutch with poorly executed launches or poor clutch control, then your normal every day shifts will suffer until the glazing wears and smooths off. The poor quality comments of this manual trans have been greatly exaggerated. |
