How is the Auto Hobby Shop on Spang?
How is the Auto Skills shop there on Spangdahlem? Do they have everything I would need to install springs/shocks and control arms? I am considering saving some $$ and just learning to install my suspension parts myself. I really don't have any experience but think I should be able to accomplish this task as long as the shop there has everything I need. It's going to be expensive if I pay somebody to do it here and I'll only get to drive it a couple of weeks before the car will get shipped anyways.
Also if somebody could post or PM me a number (DSN or comm) of the agency that handles the vehicle inspections over there. I have some questions about some car mods that might be an issue (window tint, lowering etc.). I want to be 100% that I'll have no issues when I get there, at the same time I don't want to have to strip this window tint off if I don't have to. Thanks Wade

Window tint is a no go. It has to come off (at least the front). It's only a visual inspection for safety. It can be lowered. My cr-x was SLAMMED. They cant see our cats so that should be cool too. They are sticklers on brakes and exhaust leaks/loudness.
Just call DSN 314-452-1110 and ask for the spang vehicle inspection office.

Yeah, I agree. I would never do the back and not the front.

On the lowered stance, the inspectors (not all of them) go by the German TUV requirement that the lowest hard part of the car has to be at least 10 centimeters from the ground. In laymans terms, grab a can of Goya beans which is 10 cm's and slide it under the car through the front and sides, with exception of the jack points, if it bumps with anything else under the car, they might give you crap.
That is of course, if you go get your car inspected by the german idiots over at Kapaun.

It's pretty good. Only a couple lifts fit our 1ers correctly (we have a short jack pad spacing). But other than that it's good. There are two inside wash bays which really come in handy and almost all of the work bays have new (as of '09) tool boxes with some really good quality tools.
I love the hobby shop and probably spent a good majority of my weekends there just bs'ing with people if not wrenching on my car. The civillians are very helpful as well, Bo, the fat grumpy bastard is alright once you get to know him, and Ralph the in-house German engineer is a artist with the welder and can help you out with any job there could possibly be. Can't wait to get back.

I did my first 1er suspension there. It was a pain in the the ass lol. Have fun. I would suggest that you pull the whole knuckle off and then pull the shock out.
