242 Old McKenzie Highway
Did the 242 today, coming back from Sisters, Oregon. Had to get up there with the weather break. The road will get closed real soon now again for Winter.
If you've never been down that road, it's a pretty neat run. The lava beds at the top are especially fun. |

Just looked at it on the map, that looks like fun. Is the road in good shape? We have a lot of great routes between Mt St Helens and the Oregon border but the winters do a lot of damage and they are National Forest roads which are very poorly maintained.

It's in perfect shape. I think they retopped it all this year. Plus there are a few nice stops up there. I think the Smith Lake campground is up at the top, which is a nice little lake. And of course, there are some great views of the Sisters Mountains, and of a couple of other peaks.
Bad news is they close it for winter. So you do have to hit it while you can. |
