Got my winter setup mounted...
... and then went out on a little test drive to break them in: As y'all can see, I got the 18" M3 wheels and put on the Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3Ds in 235/40 front and 255/40 rear. While I think the rims look GREAT on my BSM (and I'm thinking about having my std 19s powder coated anthracite) the tires are so-so in the cold/dry. LOTS of tread flex and I can tell that I've got a smaller contact patch in the rear (so I guess the tread flex won't last all THAT long ) Of course, on the way home I ran into a small BOULDER... (Not sure if you can see from the pic but it friggin DENTED the hood FFS!) Anyway, I'm not TOO pissed off about it since my 1M is a daily driver and this kind of crap is impossible to control (within reason at least ) I can take small comfort in the fact that a clear bra would not have helped much on this one

As far as the setup goes... mine sits on Conti Winter Contact 810s (235s all round) and I am amazed how little wheelspin there actually is! These tires actually provide better launch grip than do both the stock Michelin as well as my Pirellis (both 265s of course). Nonetheless... I'm pretty sure the rears will only last a single winter.

Thinking of just using the original rims and putting winter tires on them with a change back in the summer. Doesn't that make the most sense? Why have two sets?

If you don't have that bad winter conditions using the original rims is a good idea. The rubber is very expensive though. I could just find Pirelli and Michelin with the central Europe winter rubber standard. (meaning good on wet road but not on ice)
I did see a test with Nokian Hakka 7 (Spikes) vs Pirelli Sottozero on an ordinary car. On ice the braking distance was 30 meters! longer on ice when using the Pirellis... With 265 in the back ice and snow in bad weather is not a good scenario with gearwheel drive and 340 hp... For me that do live in Sweden where it usually are both snow and ice a couple of months I will go for 18" and Nokkian Hakka 7. Considering aftermarket as the 270Ms are way to expensive vs looks. Its hard to find good winter rims and tires to the 1M! All examples of different winter setup would be superb! I will share what I buy. The car is to be delivered in January. In the middle of the Swedish winter... |

Or would you rather go with this wheels? Both are cheaper than the 270M. Would love to hear your feedback.

@hybris4u: Me personally, I wouldn't screw no name wheels on any car that has more than 200 horses. I've seen enough rims break on racetracks and have seen the resulting effects. And the stuff that breaks is usually cheap no name junk. You can't tell the difference by looking at it, you'll notice when your wheel is torn apart. I have yet to see i.e. a BBS wheel or any other BMW OEM wheel fail, even after severe punishment. I've bent them, I've ripped bits out, but I haven't had one fail on me. But that's just me.

This is not cheap noname. Its http://www.etabetawheels.it and they are TUV and ISO 9001 certified. You can chose M3 and M5 when you check dimensions on their site. So pretty sure they product ok wheels. Its for winter not for any tracks days.
BMW don't build their own wheels either but they charge a lot... I do trust the company that recommended them. My question was what you guys think of the looks? |

You wanted feedback, I gave you feedback. My personal opinion. No more, no less. Most of the OEM BMW wheels are BBS btw. And track day or not is not the question. Driving over curbs, hitting stuff hidden beneath the snow, etc. can mean even more stress and strain than track use. That's why I mentioned it. If you trust the recommendations, fine. Buy the rims. I wouldn't. And if you ask me how I like the look of either rim, I don't like the design either. Fast & furious style. But again, that's personal.

Yes and I think the 270M look crap. Need spacers to look "ok" on the car. Not good looking just "ok". Would you buy that rims if it was not BMW? Don't think so... ;-) The taste is different. The 270M cost 1500 Euro without the lousy central europe friction rubber and 2200 euro with.. The original rims on the 1M is great looking though and that is a keeper for summer.
My BMW dealer do recommend aftermarket rims as he thinks they overprice their own rims. Funny isn't it? I know him for so many years so he is very open with me. He says they have never had any quality issues with aftermarket brand rims even on the M and Alpinas. Not talking replicas and low quality rims. Been running aftermarket wheels on my Alpinas and current X5 etc many years (winter tires) Not had a single issue. Rims are not rocket science to build with good quality. Can also tell you that the continental you put on your car did get 2 out of 5 in the large winter test of tires in Sweden as a note... Crap on ice and snow. Made for dry and wet roads. Should be ok for German winters though. |

I don't doubt, that there is better rubber for the northern winters, than what we usually buy here. Actually, I'd be surprised if there wasn't.
Honestly... I don't care, what you put on your car. It's a free world, at least in your and my part of the world. I'm not trying to convince you of anything and I'm not trying to talk anything down. You simply asked, I answered. Next time, just explicitly say, that you only want to read positive comments. That will make things a lot easier. No, seriously... I didn't mean to offend you in any way! And as far as tyre tests go... the ones we get to read here in Germany... they're almost all "influenced" by the various tire companies marketing budgets anyhow. As far as that goes, I'm with you... my dealer recommended the tire to me because he had positive feedback from his customers. If it doesn't cut it once it starts snowing, I'll be back and will have a word with him. But you're right there too... it's good on cold wet and dry roads.
