So this happened...
Goodbye factory warranty and free maintenance! Anyway, I'm posting this mostly to provide some information, since I've heard different things about the extended warranty and maintenance, and was almost "conned" by BMW. (well, not really conned, but almost convinced into a decision without knowing all of my options). When you look on the BMW website they say the extended maintenance plan for the 1 series is about $2000. This is what I was about to buy. BUT this is ONLY for the maintenance. This means that $2000 gets you 2 more years of your once yearly oil change, air filter change, brake fluid change.. and that's pretty much it, since I think they still charge you for brake pads. This does NOT extend the warranty on ANYTHING on your car! I thought it did!! If something breaks under this plan, it's still out of your pocket to replace!! Maybe I am just the naive one, but I never saw any option other than this one in my online searches, and I assumed that along with the extended maintenance you must surely get extended warranty. Instead, my dealership offered three different warranty extensions. I ended up going with the "Gold" plan for $3000, which covers everything except the radio and nav. There is a plan under it for only the important stuff - drivetrain, brakes, etc, but no cosmetics, interior, secondary systems. There is also a plan above the Gold which also covers the electronic stuff. I ended up not getting the extended maintenance at all (which is what I was originally going to get) because I can't justify spending 2 grand for what amounts to pretty much 2 extra maintenance sessions (once yearly oil/filter change). I searched online and BMW doesn't publish the warranty extension prices on their website, and when you search, the results tend to point in the direction of the maintenance program, so the information isn't exactly easy to get to. I just don't want anyone on here to run into the same problems I did and all of a sudden have to spend more money than they thought was required. By the way the sales guy talked, I could tell something was up, but didn't know what. I almost signed on for extended maintenance AND warranty without being explicitly told they were two separate plans that could be purchased separately, and the maintenance is pretty useless (in my opinion; correct me if I'm wrong, please) if you do your own oil changes and have an aftermarket air intake filter. Anyway, now I can enjoy my car worry-free for another 2 and a half years / 50 thousand miles. With this peace of mind, I know I'm going to be driving a lot more than I normally would (I love this car and I don't want to break it! hah). Hope this helps some of you who are looking to make a decision regarding the warranty when the time comes.

Thanks for the info as my warranty will expire in addition to the free maintenance in Sept. I wondered about the extended ($$$) free maintenance program.

The extended maint plan is not worth it, unless of course you have more money than tools or (knowledge) and you probably wouldn't be here on this forum anyway.....

You're incorrect on BMW not paying for brakes - pads and rotors. A full front/rear brake job, including new rotors and pads, is nearly $1700 (from the dealership), and at $2K, it would nearly make it pay for itself. But - in my case, I only have 35K miles on my E92 and still have 70%+ of my pads and rotors remaining. Doubtful I'd get those worn down enough before the time limit came around. Aside from that, the oil services and the other recommended services like brake/coolant flushing and other maintenance that comes in around 60K miles might approach that number for higher-mileage cars.

Are we saying that brakes/pads aren't covered under the extended warranty? Because I just picked my car up yesterday from getting new front rotors/pads at 40k miles and didn't pay for them.

I'll be at 4 years on March. 25! Trying to beat on my brakes a bit, as BMW just replaced all 4 pads but said my rotors were close to being out of spec, like .02 or something like that, So i'm trying to wear that little bit off and get new brakes before maintenance runs out. LOL Still waiting to hear on the group buy on the extended warranty package.

As I understand it. Brakes are covered under the maintenance plan for normal wear and tear. The only thing that is covered for brakes under warranty is if something goes wrong, i.e. bad sensor.
With that in mind, the $2 grand doesn't sound so bad. |

Sensors are about $20, you'll need one front and one rear, and technically, you're supposed to replace the set screws, which are $1.25 each. You'd need a caliper tool, which is about $10 to reset the rear pistons, and $10 of fluid, bringing you to about $650 in total parts needed for a full front and rear brake job. |

I was probably wrong about the BMW brakes not being covered. Though I have to say that I switched to Hawk pads anyway because the BMW brakes were always squeaking. I brought the car to BMW multiple times complaining of this, and they never fixed it so I gave up. Awesome maintenance right there
But anyway, the pads would be covered, but not for me.. And I'm assuming rotors never need changing unless they get damaged. But they're not a "wear and tear" item so if they get damaged/warped and it's not my fault... is that a maintenance issue, a warranty issue (covered by the extended?), or a "your own problem" issue? That's the only downside I see to not having done the maintenance plan. I guess I forgot about the brakes because I stopped getting them for free in exchange for some peace and quiet!

Lol if I remember right you were at 60K last summer when I just had hit 3 years. OG Status!
If I wasn't in Baltimore for 2 of my years of ownership and left the car up here, I'd probably be where you're at. Crazy! But a friend once left his car in my driveway down there.. and it got spray painted with gang signs the first night it was parked there. Nope, nope, nope. PS- Did you get any extension on your warranty/maintenance?

BMW told me $3020 for the 6 year, 100,000 mile Gold level warranty tonight when i stopped in and had them add a quart of oil to my engine as it was low. That's fairly normal right? Still says 7000 miles till oil change due. I wish the Group buy warranty guys would hurry up and get me some info!

I tried to. Walked into my dealership at 47K but was told that wouldnt sell one to me. They gave me some crap about how if I wanted a warranty I needed to have purchased it before the car hit 45K. I called bullshit but some guy from corporate backed them up on this. after that I just said eff it and what could go wrong... never ask that question. |

Agreed, my rotors were past the minimum thickness at 40k miles. I haven't actually looked at the 1er manual, but know that my M Coupe required the rotors and pads to be replaced at the same time, regardless of rotor thickness.
