Rnm, do you have any logs of how the WGDC looks with the stock intake? One of the main reasons for going to a better breathing intake is to reduce WGDC and make the turbo workload less severe. Obviously, it's not hurting your performance so maybe the NEED for a DCI is exaggerated.

I think the dci would help you over the stock restricted air box. |

Maybe if my commute was mostly highway like it was a few months back I would consider it, but I drive in the city mostly now and I can't stand that 'mushy' throttle response from DCIs. Yeah, need better tires than RFT's to pull that off though. We gotta meet up sometime again. 1er's towers meet again perhaps? |

You should probably take yours to the track and see how you do. Hopefully this doesn't turn into another intake war thread. |

He Said, She Said. Tell me how a DCI loses power over the stock airbox? Wanting hard facts, people always say DCI is bad, or good but I'd like hard evidence, once I see it, and if it is in fact true, my stock airbox will go back on!

I’ll be honest I was hesitant before I installed my dci, I read all the debates about stock vs dci and I had made my mind that I was never going to install it. However, I basically got one for free and I said “what the heck, let me put that sucker on and see what happens”, to be honest I did not fill much hp gains but I definitely did not feel any loss of power. The sound it makes definitely wins me over. And with all the mods I have I don’t think it would hurt.

To aid in beating a dead horse, the debate as I understand it is hotter intake charge vs. better flow. It would be very difficult to actually test the DCI, or any intake, in real-world conditions, without a dyno/wind tunnel combo. With our intake, we tried to split the difference between DCI and drop-in: we kept the closed factory box and added an external filter. On our dyno, with admittedly imperfect testing (open hood) we saw a 8whp gain over just a drop in. I would expect the DCI to do something similar to that. The issue with drag racing is that you are building heat under the hood during staging, which means your intake charge would presumably be warmer at launch with a DCI than with closed box. I don't think anyone really knows what effect that would have.
That's really the point: the DCI vs closed box debate has not been definitively proven either way, and I think it's unlikely that it will: it would be too complex of a test environment to create. On topic: congrats on the great run! |

I tend to think DCI is a crapshoot as well. It's not worth getting worked up over it. I went ahead and did it because it sounds cool. I can almost hear the turbos now! For $70 DIY-style, I'm not hurting. The stock air box is actually pretty decent in my opinion and has a nice size filter.
At higher power levels with an upgraded intercooler I would tend to say the you want as much air filter surface area as you can get, and I would worry less about intake temps.

With increased IAT's, timing may be pulled after continuous pulls especially in hot temps. With summer lurking around the corner here in Florida, I'm just going to stick it out with my stock box, but I may go with a high flow drop in filter in the near future before getting another tune of my own.

Ok after much thought and finding a good deal on a intake, I may just pull the trigger on a Stett CAI v2 and see how I do once more at PBIR with nothing else changed. I'm not expecting much to be honest, but I'll see whenever it comes in and run it. If anyone wants a great deal on a Stett cold air intake version 2, PM Jeff@topgearsolutions and see if he can get you in on a groupbuy that he is having.
I'll post my results here once again. |

I will be running tomorrow night again and update my results. Still haven't gotten the intake, so it is more or less the same setup as before except now I have apex arc8's rims. I guess we will see what 28lbs reduction of rotational mass will do for me. Might even log some runs, but does anyone know if logs will be skewed if I spin especially off the line?
Oh well, I'll be happy either way if I can reproduce what I did last time. |

Went out again to test out the consistency of this tune and well, I am very pleased. Since I only had one pass last time, I figured it might've been a fluke or something on pump gas lol but alas Cobb proved me wrong. My first run I was rushed and had a terrible 2.6 60ft lol. My 2nd run I did well again but with a slightly worse 60ft compared to my original post of this thread. 117mph trap speeds with simple mods on pump gas is truly astonishing IMO: (4037)
Cobb Stage 2+ aggressive stock throttle v301 Helix FMIC Raceland downpipes Apex ARC8's with OEM 335i RFT's (they were free, so I can't complain lol) Thanks for looking. |
