Drivers side front wheel ticking ???
BMW people,
While cornering right I get a tick-----tick----tick--- when I really corner hard, such as when decreasing a radius while in a turn without increasing cornering speed, I get tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, t,t,t,t,t,t,t,t,t,t,t,t,t - and so on. I am only hearing it from the left side front wheel and it increases the ticking frequency given the corner aggression. Does not make the same noise while turning right. No stones stuck in the tires, last year this was a much difference sound coming from the same area, not really ticking. But harder to describe. Comments ? Edit: noise not coming from front but rear diff... New diff is on order Updated August 1 2012 a replacement wheel bearing has fixed this problem... for now Last edited by rapter; 08-01-2012 at 10:23 AM.. |

Have you driven through any gravel recently? Little rocks can get stuck between the rotors and dust shields. When it happened to me it sounded like a tin can being kicked around. Eventually the little rock fell out nut it was weird because it only happened at low speeds.

Sounds like maybe your inner fender liner is contacting your tire. Check out this link...
Warranty: BMW replaces free of charge 1M front fender liners (rubbing issue) http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...t=fender+liner

Ticking noise I hear sounds more like a bicycle rear hub clicking than a metallic tin sound |

I had a sound in my 1M a couple of weeks ago. When I turned right it made a click sound, it was a hard sound, specially when the car was cold. But it only cliked once thru the turn and always clicked on the same angle of the stearing. The car was almost brand new so I took it to the BMW shop and they lifted the car and took of a lid on the bottom. The technician figured it out right away. There is a little black bootie that covers some components in the direction. The bootie was too compressed and it made that sound while stearing. They changed the bootie and the problem was 100% solved. Maybe you can give that a try. P.S. I hope I explained the bootie deal good enough. its kind of hard explaining this things in english. good luck |

My Wife and I just checked the car.
1) - no nail in the tire 2) - no stones or pebbles 3) - no shinny plastic in the wheel wells indicating rubbing Wife rolled the car forward with the wheel turned to the right only, and slowly rolling we both can hear the click - tick that I am hearing at higher speeds. Only difference is that at low speed we are hearing only 1-click tick per revolution of the wheel. Had wife stand on the outside corner of a turn and semi-aggressively turned right away from her (aiming for the apex of course) and we both are hearing a sequence of ticking-clicking as the car loads up the left hand side suspension and rolls through the corner. Will have to take to the dealer-obviously will advise on looking at the "bootie" as indicated above. |

If it ain't a nail, pebble, wheel bolt or fender liner issue, then maybe your tire has a 'flat spot' due to wheel lock-up under a hard braking manoeuvre.
F1 drivers try to avoid lock-up because the 'flat spot' rattles/shakes them up. "Sometimes a lead-footed driver may accelerate to a level where the force is more than the grip can cope with, and will get wheelspin. The same may be applied to braking, but in this case rather than the track being stationary and the wheel accelerating, it is the opposite. The driver tries to slow the wheel whilst the track is still moving. If the amount he tries to slow by is more than the grip allows, the wheel will slide, the rubber will be worn away by the abrasive track surface - leaving plumes of smoke - and the driver will be left with Eddie Irvine locking up during the 1998 European GPa ‘flat spot’. This is exactly as is says - a flat part on the normally round tyre, and will cause the car to have vibrational and handling problems. To prevent this occurring, systems such as traction control (now banned) and anti-lock braking electronically control the amount of force input by the driver, and will not allow any more than that which will take the tyre to the limit of adhesion." Today it was confirmed that the Ticking that I am hearing is not related to any of the following:
1. gravel 2. Nail 3. Fender liner rubbing. Ticking is not even coming from the front... it was/ is coming from the rear diff on right hand turns only. This was verified in a round-about where I started a series of continuous right hand-turns which provided a friend to stand in the middle and identify exactly where the car's noises were coming from. From the driver's perspective the sound appears to be coming from the front, where in reality the ticking is coming from the back. Dealership has already added the Castrol Additive to the back of the diff to help with the grinding at low speeds. So we are going to add this to the list of items. |

This is so called 'noisy diff'. My dealer changed the diff oil to (SAE 75W-140, SAF-SJ, +FM), trying to make noise disappear.
I have followed the instruction to make 20 times of left and right in a circle after the fluid changed, noise seems to be getting lesser but still around. Now, even I get used to the noise but not from friends of mine. My simple answer to them is “hmmm….. this is ‘M’” |
