TPMS Question
I know there are forums for stuff like this.... but some reason I trust you silly bastards a little more than the random trolls around here...
Anyways, for the TPMS, would it be easier/cheaper to just swap out my current TPMS once I get my wheels ready for the spring? I have the VMR 710's, and tires, but no TPMS yet. I have found a couple of good deals on some sets... but honestly never dealt with TPMS before. Is it easy just to take them out and put them in the new wheels? Just looking for some feedback on the issue. Thanks all. David

You could swap/transfer your TPMS sensors from your OE wheels to your aftermarket ones. I think you will need a special low torque wrench though. Something like ~7Nm(???). Its very easy to over torque the valve stems and break them though. I would have a German tire shop do the swap.
Brand new TPMS sensors aren't that expensive though. Back in 2010 they were around 45 euros each. I bet the price has dropped a lot since then. I would stop by a BMW dealer and ask.

I can find some for good prices, that's not my main concern, just didn't want to spend the money if I didn't have to. But if truly would just be more simple, I guess it would be worth it in the long run.

In the long run it will be cheaper for you to buy a 2nd set of TPMS and just use those new sensors for your new tires/wheels. Also be aware that the batteries in the TPMS only last about five years. So make sure teh set you buy hasn't been sitting on the shelf for many years. The tire shops (and the BMW dealer) have a special tool which can read the % of battery life remaining.

I don't run TPMS on my winter non-RFT set, I just put up with the warning light.
It's also a reminder to stay below 106mph on the Autobahn.

I would just get the extra set of TPMS and maintain that peace of mind. Remember, everytime you mount/dismount the wheels to change them you have to pay for the re-balancing and also the mounting.

My snows(on both bmw cars) are rated "H" so I can "only drive" up to 210kph or 135mph. Sometimes even that seems too slow to me! Sometimes on a dry clean day I have been known to go beyond the 210 kph limit.

I'm right there with Dack...
And yeah Nick, I think you're right. Looks like I'll be in the market for a set after all.

I'm not happy about it, but 106mph seemed pretty fast 19 months ago...

My recommendation is to pony up and get a second TPMS for your second set of rims....if you'll be running two sets of rims/tire combos. The technology is invaluable. This past year there was a time when every week my TPMS told me to add air to a new tire on my second set of rims that didn't look low. after four weeks of adding air, i took the car to a shop. They couldn't find any leak but trusted that i wasn't crazy so went ahead and broke the seal to find a small pebble between the seal and rim that only leaked when there was weight on the tire...no issues since!
Had i been ignorantly cruising at 106 or beyond, thinking my low-profile tires were okay because they looked okay, it could of ended much differently.

My previous MY 2006 E90 used the vehicles stability system to monitor tire pressure by detecting slight differences in rotational speed. The European cars still use this method.
Essentially, what happens is the cars computer is reset (coded) to work off the European version simply by changing a setting the the cars computer. Then you simply unplug the antenna module in the right rear of the trunk and hit the "learn"/reset button on the Idrive or steering column stalk. I picked up a nail in my E90 & my wife's X3 picked up two nails in both instances the Euro version preformed as advertised. The warning light came on in time to limp to a dealer for a replacement. The E90 had run flats & the X3 ran Michelin Pilot Sports. Hope this helps

Ahhhh, I see. Sounds like a good idea.
Will it throw a code if the rim has a slight bend or vibration?

Replacing the wheels & tires was like getting a brand new car. I tried to save a few bucks and had the wheel "repaired" at the Fayetteville Dealership. This did not work as the vibration came back and slowly grew worse. It was only after the wheel & tires were replaced with new ones did I realize how poorly the car felt. Sounds like you have a good or offer on some new wheels?
