Sport Auto: 1M vs M135i on Hockenheim performance results
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com But keep in mind the M135i has Michelin Pilot Super Sports tires which are better rated even than the 1M's Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires. |

Yep.
The 1M is proven faster. However the impressive thing about the M135 is that it cost $10k less than the 1M while being able to achieve similar performance.

I would call this just as much of a win for the M135....
Those numbers are very close. Considering the price gap, the fact that it wasn't too easy to get a 1M, and the more functional M135, I give the M135 a lot of credit.

1M has PS2 and M135 has PSS...
My 2011 M3 came with PS2 and now it has PSS. Believe me, The gap between those tires is really amazing. BTW the M135 is quick despit it's an ugly car.

But between the 1M and M135, if these cars are so close in performance it amazes me that a month ago a driver took the M135 to Nordschleife and drove 8:05 BtG on a wet track and the official 1M time with it's pro driver took 8:14 on a dry track? Did the 1M drive a different route or was the M135 so much better or was the M135 driver so much better?

Seriously impressive. The difference between the 1M and the M135i are much smaller than I thought. It is almost enough to make up for the sound debacle.
This really makes me wonder what the M2 will be like. That shit will be crazy. |

"The only thing I’d point out not fair in this comparison is that the M135i has the Michelin’s new Pilot Super Sports [PSS] which according to Michelin have better performance that the Michelin Pilot Sports [PS2] that the 1 Series M wears."

The M135i may be on PSS but it is also running a smaller tire width (less grip) so that is almost even. The performance similarity is astounding considering it has less HP and an open diff... oh and it is a HATCH!!!

Predictable result. Always love how thorough Sport Auto is with their test. Great statistics and performance. Win for BMW either way!

There is a considerable tire difference, from brand and size perspective. M135i > 1M

The real test, of course, will be the F22 M2 vs. the E82 1M.

Nevertheless, M135i takes the prize for the best bung for the money if you can live with the looks. This was what I posted in the other thread before: Results are mostly like I was expecting, and whereever M135i gets really close to 1M or even betters it at few details, it is very likely down to tire difference (PSS vs PS2) like it is stated in the text. It is very interesting for example that the brakes in the hatch works superb at normal speeds but from 200 km/h to 0, there is a considerable difference to 1M's advantage 133.0 meters vs. 140,4 meters, which is a truck's length. The same observation applies to slalom/handling tests. Another detail is, in fact Sport Auto dynoed M135i with 340 ps and 493 nm at the crank and published it, so if we compare it with average dyno results for 1M (let's say around 360 ps and 550 nm) it is rather interesting that both are underrated at similar percentages and both weigh close to each other (1M even lighter with 7 kg.) despite BMW's claims that the hatch would be quite lighter than 1M. The article has an error by the way, 1M is the lighter car on Sport Auto's balance. Despite tire disadvantage, at the relatively short Hockenheim track, lap difference of 1.6 seconds alone demonstrates how well the 1M suits to track duty compared to M135i with 8-speed auto and adaptive suspension. Horst von Saurma's 8.14.9 minutes Ring time for the 1M on the other hand remains arguable in my eyes but that's a whole other discussion.

Im sure the differences with the tire types did make affect the results of the comparison, but its interesting to see the M1 had much more contact with the road. 245F/265R vs 225F/245R this couldve let the M1 stay stuck to the track a bit more. Just my novice opinion tho...

Most likely you'd get 2-5 seconds difference driving same car with the same driver |
