I just picked up my new 135i couple of weeks ago and it was already fitted with the performance pack. I love the power but really don't have the earlier version to compare it to.

This was a good thread until it was ruined by a cat fight, pissing contest. They are both great engines so deal with it. Just wait until they come out with something else to bitch about. Just enjoy your cars find ways to improve them and try not to get too many speeding tickets. I am in Germany and own a 2012 135i with the M package with 7 speed auto. It's all stock. I love the car except it needing to have a better suspension IMO. I came to read what people had to say about their 135i cars and get to read this. Craziness! Maybe, there should be a BMW 135 fight club so you can beat each other up over the difference in a engine put into a car. Glad no one brought up religion or anything about our government.

I am enjoying the car. I am so glad I cancelled my order on a 2013 Mustang GT and ordered the 135. The 135 is great except for the price to have it serviced here in Germany because unlike the states you have to pay for it here until I get back state side. Of course I'll wish I was back here once I get to the states because of the speed limits and I'll end up paying the man for speeding tickets instead of BMW for the service here. The 135 is a rocket and I really can't bitch about anything about it because its my first 135i I also bought a 2012 335i Sport line and it hauls ass as well. BMW has done a great job with these cars. The sad thing is the 335 gets better fuel mileage than the 135 does. I average 23 MPG and get 32 MPG in the 335. You would think it would be the other way around. But, who cares the N55's are awesome engines and can be tuned to get adequate horse power to get the job done.

I'm purchasing a 2011 BMW135 soon and took a picture of the engine. Is this an N55 or N54 engine ? Thanks in advance.
If this engine is N55, is this better than the N54 ? Regards-Capri Last edited by capri; 09-20-2012 at 07:19 AM.. |

I did the BMS downpipe and BMS intake. Both cheap and work well. I have a thread started with a dyno video of my car to hear it.
Without tune I think you will not realize the full potential of mods.

Anyone know if there is any differnce between model years of the N55? I installed a procede today, and on map 0 it runs fine, but on any other map, the RPMs will not reach above 1,200RPM. I have a 2013 135i, and im wondering if there is something new with the 135i then say a 2011 or 2012?

I don't think there is any software upgrade available for any 2012 or 2013 135i except for the BMW PPK for the time being. Could be wrong about procede, though.

so as far as you know, no procede, JB4, or Cobb will work on a 2012 or higher N55? I guess i assumed that the N55 is the same for all model years, but i konw Cobb says their accessport will only work for the 2011 N55. has anyone heard of a Procede on a 2013 135i yet? My hunch is the Procede is installed correctly because Map 0 works fine, but as soon as i go to Map 1 or more, no bueno. So leads me to a software issue. Im waiting to hear back from Vishnu. Talke to them yesterday and they were helpful.

Vishnu was stumped, as was I, so its shipped back to them for trouble shooting. I did hear the newer 135's (as mine is a 2013) has newer software that make it harder to flash new software ect. We shall see...

The only N55 2013 tune I have seen to date is BMW PPK.

Need advices
Hi gents, After reading some of your post I still can稚 make a clear decision. Most of the N54 vs N55 comparisons I red only concern the tunability and powerband. Actually I知 on the market for buying a used 135i MT. I want the best fuel efficiency as possible, the lowest long term maintenance cost and the best reliability. Which engine comply the most with my needs? Should I go with N54 or new version N55 engine and why? Does it worth the price to pay more to get a more recent car with the twinscroll single turbo? Feel free to reply with any comments that could guide my choice or refer to existing post if information already there. I知 not planning to modify the car and I will use it as my daily drive. I知 not interested anymore in a twin clutches transmission. My previous car is a modified Ralliart 2009 (12.9s@104mph), stock turbo, 26psi Thanks for your expertise. |

Outside of tuning potential, there isn't a lot of practical difference between the N54 and N55 for someone who is just going to drive it day-to-day and not mod it. The N55 has the newer VALVETRONIC system, which eliminates the need for a throttle body and increases efficiency. The N55 also has a single turbo with a design that uses two inlets at with different geometry relative to the turbine. This design is supposed to have all the advantages of a twin turbo setup, but without the extra weight and complexity. Over the really, really long term, that means only one turbo to replace. Vangard performance has a nice page outlining the differences between the two engines here: http://www.vanguard-performance.com/...mw-n54-vs-n55/ Since your primary focus is reliability and efficiency, I'd say go for an N55 car. If I recall correctly, the N55 came with the new HPFP part from the beginning, so your chances of avoiding that problem are much better. I don't know if this will work, but this link should show you an 2010 (N54) 135i compared to a 2011 (N55) model: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find....29828&id=30011 In case that doesn't work: 2010 135i: 18/20/25 city/combined/hwy 2011 135i: 20/23/28 city/combined/hwy I own a 2011 135i with a 6-speed manual, and I get around 24 MPG with an 80/20 city/hwy mix. I drive it conservatively most of the time. If I were in your shoes, I would look for a CPO 135i, but finding a manual might be a challenge. According to my dealer, less than 1% of the 1-series imported have a manual transmission. My lease goes back in July of this year. I don't know what your timeline is, but my car is incredibly clean. We don't have kids, and I don't eat in the car. The car is spotless, with the exception of one chip on the front edge of the hood. No door dings, because I park in the middle of nowhere, and the car has never been modded. All service has been performed at the dealer (thanks to BMW service being included). I don't know how off-lease cars work, but if you wanted an inside line on my car, I'd be willing to connect with you at turn-in to see if I can funnel the car your direction.
