How long do coils last?
I've got my original coils on my 08 with 64K miles on it. Not tuned. I'm getting what feels like light stuttering or misfires (rough acceleration) under WOT at higher rpm, especially going up a hill. Although it does not seem to affect performance (still pulls strong).
Had the carbon cleared out 20K ago and the plugs changed 10K ago. I understand it might be a coil, but before I go and troubleshoot it down to a specific coil should I just be looking at changing all of them due to age? How long do you think our coils are good for? |

I would read codes if possible, then if one is faulty then just swap it with a good one if the problem moves replace it if it doesn't you have another issue. Injectors are a possibility with misfires.

That was the case with mine. Throwing codes, car was running like crap (barely driveable) and it was an injector |

Also would like to add, that you even though you replaced plugs one could be faulty so don't rule it out. Did you replace with BMW ones? because from what I read is that you can get issues with non BMW ones.

You'll know when you get persistent misfires on a cylinder that doesn't move unless you move the coil. I have 61k miles on mine and just recently had to replace cylinder 1 coil as it was faulty and giving me persistent misfires. All spark plugs were replaced about 6k miles ago.

I think I saw in a Cobb video that they said its around 60K to 80K. I find that hard to believe at first, but our cars do go thru coils - you can see that by reading posts on our forum.
I think around that mileage it would be wise to change all the coils. Maybe do it with new spark plugs too. At that mileage the injectors could be bad too. But generally you should change a coil first (or move it) and then an injector for that cylinder. Most opt for moving them first. Carbon buildup could also cause a misfire too.

I'm having WOT problems with my '09 135i. I replaced the plugs with BMW originals and problems still with me but I have no dashboard indications. Did you replace your coils? If so, did that clear up your problems?

It did. When I replaced the coils I noticed that the contacts on two of them where black and pitted. 65k on the original coils. I also felt an improvment on WOT acceleration on hot days.
