Drive Away Pricing
Hi All,
I'm looking into purchasing a second car for the wife and pretty keen on the M135i. I was wondering if anyone could share some insight on how much negotiation there is to be had when purchasing a brand. On BMW's website, the recommended drive-away price is: $72,329.80. Obviously that is before anything is optioned on. But working on the base price, is there a 'rough' percentage you could expect negotiate within? I've purchased several new cars before (but mainly through corporate), but would be good to in there armed with a bit of knowledge to ensure I'm getting a fair price. Thanks in advance! |

I received 15%-18% off the driveaway price of 2 out of 3 BMW's i have had, i went and visited the dealer with two of my hectic cousins. The dealer was too scared to say no to the price i was after. If you don't have scary cousins you can go to hireahectic.com.au to get a few scary looking mofos to help you wipe off thousands from you driveaway price.

10% off the standard drive away list price is normally what you can aim for. It not at all unreasonable to expect a 10% discount if the car has a lot of overpriced options and assuming it is a new car from the warehouse. I only ordered base spec cars and factory orders, so I never quite got 10% off but still close enough. Maybe 5% off their best offer, but still I don't think that's reliable because the salesman will judge you based on your appearance, history, and whether or not they believe you are actually going to buy. Dealers always spin stupid stories and a list of reasons why you have to pay extra money, so always be prepared to walk away. I never tried the help of hectic cousins though.

if your not getting 10% off RRP on a brand new car you arent trying hard enough IMO. BMW sales seem to never "negotiate" in the old school meaning of the word though. They will mostly only go on a price you offer them. Start at 15-20% depending on the full price and make them an offer, likely it will be rejected, so walk away and wait at least a few days before trying again. Patience is a virtue!

It depends. 10% is always a good aim provided there's no long waiting list and no support from the option upped price. Also watch what they are charging for delivery as some dealers are greedier than others.
If there is support from BMW, there could be huge discounts like the running out X5 and X6s. I was looking at a 335i during the GFC and the initial offer from a dealer was 30k off list price. On the other hand if the car has a long waiting list, it is hard to get good discounts without some sort of previous relationships.

10 % is a minimum plus option especially when they have stock on the floor.
I negotiated my evo x with all the extras that I wanted back in 2010 for 56k drive away and they where 66k new plus options. I negotiated my mums c200 with a nice 18k discount of the sale price, brand new. my sisters corolla sedan 20500 drive away from original 25k. It really depends how hard your going to squeeze them, I was haggling the corollla from 21k to 20.5k for over an hr till he gave in lol and that's after he dropped from 25k. ( My sister was so embarrassed ) I just told her to walk away until i'm finished with him. If you got cash well that's even a different story. Moral to the story push for every penny you can get, they are not selling cars atm they will endeavour to make a sale just about at any cost now. Its a buyers market atm. |
