Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy an aftermarket ring and pinion gear set with an LSD and just run those instead of trying to machine off the carrier from the ring, machining the ring gear and reattaching? Or are there just no aftermarket ring and pinions?

For us manual guys, its $2500+ for standard 3.08 ratio , and $3500+ for 3.46 ratio (excluding refundable core charge ranging from $500 to $1500). Then you have to deal with shipping your core back within 30 days or less.
Then add the costs for diff fluid, and labor to get your old diff out, and new one in. Should have bought a proper M car ... ;-)

Just found two diffs from 2010 135i automatic cars from a scrap yard in my area. This would mean a 3.46 ratio instead of the 3.08 in my manual 2011 135i, and a bolted diff, for a cheaper conversion.
Would this pumpkin plug'n'play, ie, bolts on directly to my driveshaft and halfshafts on my manual 2011 135i? Any other caveats to look out for? I will be soon placing an order for one of these, in order of higest to lowest preference: 1- Quaife, 2- Turner Motorsport 2-clutch LSD, 3- Turner Motorsport 3-clutch LSD, 4- Turner Motorsport 3 clutch LSD with variable ramp angles. 5- Wavetrac 6- OS Giken (special 75W250 OSG fluid is mandatory, which seems like a PITA) Looking for a diff that will be quiet (for street use), robust (will track the car often), helps my 135i become more predictable on the track, and more predictable during winter conditions (nice-to-have). Your thoughts?

That pricing is wrong.
$2,574 for a welded 3.08, 2.56 or 2.81 (big body) $2,249 for a bolted 3.46 (small or big body) You then add core. $900 used, $1700 new. We pay you $900 when you send me your stock Final Drive. Shops charge $200-$300 to swap diffs usually. I have a few 3.46 big bodies in stock if you are interested in a ratio change. I also have 3.08 big bodies in stock. We are a 1 stop shop for all 135/335 diffs - we have sold 100s successfully. :-) Quote:

Will not fit. The 3.46 auto final drive from a 2010 is physically smaller and will not bolt in. Read my FAQ, it explains everything with pics
Quaife gets my vote. Quote:

just learned that I need a big body. Any advantages or cost savings if I send you a welded 3.08 big body diff to get it converted to a bolted 3.46 by you guys? What if Im able to source a "bolted" big body locally, and send it to you for conversion?

Made a couple of phone calls, and found two recyclers that have 2007 335i big bodies 3.46 ratio auto diffs still mounted to the cars. I will call them back and ask them for their VIN numbers, to make sure they are within Aug 2006 to August 2007 production dates, as your FAQ so vividly describes ... ;-) All I would need is to buy your "Quaife - A.T.B. Limited Slip Differential, E87 / E88 1 Series " 10n or 13N, @ $1469USD, correct?

We have a winner! VIN number from recycler works out to Nov 2006, so right in sweet spot (same part number from Aug 2006 to Sept 2007 Production date, as per RealOEM.com). You may want to correct your FAQ table which states August 2007 as end date...
I will pay $500CAD for 3.46 ratio big body bolted diff, get it delivered to my Indi, and place my order for the 10N or 13N Quaife (one way shipping, and no core refund stuff)!

Do you have someone good to build the diff for you? I can supply whatever you want, I just hope you have a proven diff builder ready if you bring just the parts. |

Mike I have a question. Is the differential for a 2009 335ix AWD MT sedan the same as a 2008 335i RWD MT coupe? Mine is the '08 and I know it has a 3.08 welded open differential and I am hoping this one will be a simple full pumpkin swap.
Thanks |

Mike - tried to send you a PM but your box is full. Have a question about a Quaife DCT package. Specifically wondering if I already have a Quaife unit, how much would it cost for you to install into housing (assuming I ship to you)? And separately how much would it cost for you do the swap if I drive down to Philly? Assuming in the latter scenario, I can avoid the $900 core charge too since you wouldn't have to ship the diff out and could wait for me to come down.

Thread revival!
Car: 08 135i AT Any idea on what would it take to convert my small 3.46 to a large 3.08? Seems that finding a larger 3.08 or 3.16 is way easier than a small... |

So the easier solution (in theory) would be to get a larger 3.08 and send that to MFactory for their LSD solution. Then bolt that in place of my smaller pumpkin. I just need to know if that is actually possible and if so what else would need replaced or modified? |

Just a FYI for others:
Here is the note I just received back from VAC Tony what you need to do is source a sub frame and large diff from a 135 manual. That is the only way you can do tis conversion as the small boxes only cam with a 3.46. Also in our experience the small boxes have nothing but issues with heat and they end up failing with the power your engine is making. THANK YOU FOR THE INFO VAC!!! |
