I would also consider a pickup or SUV, something with more ground clearance and capabilities the 1M doesn't have. The SUV would comfortably carry 4-5 people (or more) and luggage, for instance. An X3 would still be entertaining to drive. A properly set up car will be fine unless you need to go through an unplowed area or a pile of snow pushed up by the plow. For those situations you need more ground clearance. A subaru might be OK, not sure of their ground clearance. I also have a SUV as a second vehicle for towing boats and utility trailers.

So, I ended up with a nice MKVI Golf GTI, 6 speed, 2 door base model, I think it will prove a nice winter car. It is a decent set of new all season tires on it, I'll play it by ear to see if I get some dedicated snow tires. I looked for a manual Jeep Wrangler, but what a tall order that was, oh well...
Seems winter is coming early this year, already had a few winter driving tests, glad I got this figured out. TJ |

My current winter tire set-up: Pirelli Winter 270 Sottozero Serie II (front: 245/35R19 93W XL | rear: 265/35R19 98W XL).
My future winter tire set-up: Michelin Pilot Alpin (front: 245/35R19 93W XL | rear: 265/35R19 98W XL) (this type of tire has been homologated by Porsche as standard (winter) tyre for the 911). Generally speaking, 18" allows better driving than 19" as winter tire size. Check also the winter tire thread: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=533397

In fact you would be right; the Pirelli Nero Zero's that came with it weren't bad in snow, but the 16" Winters were much better and rode very nicely...PM me as to where you live and maybe we can compare VO's as well as winter beaters!
