E87 Pre LCI BMW 130i Stereo Upgrade Options
My Professional BMW Head Unit is misbehaving. At cold start it keeps cutting the sound in both Radio and CD player mode every 10 or 30 seconds, sometimes the display even blink OFF and ON again. The "sound cut/display OFF-ON" lasts only one to two seconds each time, but it is maddeningly infuriating! :-)
The strangest thing is that if the stereo "warms up" (after a few minutes of riding, or after starting the car just after a mid to long ride) it behaves correctly. So I would like to upgrade it to an aftermarket or OEM replacement. I was searching for a touchscreen, multimedia, with sat-nav support unit, but only found them for the LCI E87. Nothing for the pre LCI model (mine is a BMW 130i 2006/2007). Does anyone here knows if I have any options to upgrade the stereo to both get rid of its problems and to have a nicer stereo interface? (of course, it must keep the CB controls and steering wheel controls, or else I would prefer to live with the defective unit...) This is an actual picture of my head unit: Last edited by loudenvier; 02-26-2014 at 12:00 AM.. |

Try BabyBMW forums.
Or e90post for 330i and 335i pre LCI. Best places to find retrofit guides on Stereo's

Same for LCI versions of both, just for above they share the same ECU brands and most likely the Stereo wiring, keep in mind you need e8x parts for any guide you find Use realoem.com for part number searching. These cars are like lego, many parts fit

The realoem site is amazing! But the fascia on the E9x looks different in mosts pictures, I can't be sure if this a kit made for this: will fit in mine which looks like this: Maybe it's the angle, but I can't be sure they are actually the same! But that's what I'm hoping for... Taking another look on the photos the 3 series has a different height. The air conditioning fascia, including the seated heats (which I don't have) is taller. I believe the head unit is identical, but a retrofit kit using the entire fascia, which includes the air-conditioning and heat controls won't fit at all... :-( |

Basically my advise is to use e90post and 1addicts audio sections to understand what you need to do. Obviously e90 plastic may not fit e87 interior. I wish I could help more, There are many more talented/knowlegable peopel for audio than me. I actually keep my radio off

I'm just not sure that their current units will fit on my PRE-LCI... They said that "if the radio in your BMW is similar to this, then it is plug and play": But I don't know if the pre-LCI Professional Head Unit shares the same fascia with the current one depicted on the picture... It may be the same, and only the lower fascias (heat controls, heated seat controls) are of different sizes... I'll send a message to them, and will see if they ship to Brazil. Thank you very, very much. |

A quick question: Are the E8x Professional Head Units IDENTICAL in dimensions/fitment on the pre and post LCI cars? I'm starting to believe that only the fascias of the air conditioning and heat seat controls are different, the Head Unit itself seems identical!

Another very important question:
did you have to relocate your Head Unit? They say the Dynavin is a Plug and Play replacement, but I don't consider relocating the head unit to be plug and play! |

Looks like it comes with a new head unit, note it relocated the hazard switch in that area too. I shared this head unit with some other guys a thread. I know there's another plug and play kit out there. I can't find the link right now but when I do I will post it.

I've read in a ebay announcement about the Dynavin that "you may have to keep and relocate your head unit", that's why I asked the owner if he had to do that. I'll ask the guys at Dynavin directly! Thank you. |

Thanks kobeballer96, but this other head unit does NOT fit the pre-LCI BMW E87... It fits the LCI one, after 2007... Just take a look at the picture of my dash and the one of the installer kit you've sent, and you'll see they are quite different in height... so I won't be able to fit this incredibly nice unit on my car :-( |

if you want a double DIN pre-LCI, you need the lower dash panels as well.. in ours, the dash meets underneath the climate control
in LCI, it doesn't, there's an extra panel that curves under, so you can fit a double DIN relocating the Climate control, with no seat heating. otherwise you need a single din with retractable screen. Quote:
not true! i have an alpine 9887 with a connects2 kit, and it works PERFECTLY. no lights. plug and play (well, you have to find a constant 12v fuse lol) and you don't use the head unit to recode, that's done through the OBD port. |
