I read this whole all posts, but still would like to confirm that the E9x/M3 diff housing size is almost, or at least the 135i and E9x/M3 subframe mounting points are in the same position.

Where can I find details about how the 135i driveshaft needs to be modified?
No issue with 135i axle shafts fitment, correct?

Just looking at all my options before dropping ~$3K on a Quaife ...

Thanks ...

The whole E92 V8 M3 diff and cradle can be swapped out in your 135 with some massaging of rear brakes.

I have opted to do this in my car. The overall cost is higher than a Quaife.
I imported one from overseas as local ones are hard to find and are cost prohibitive. The total swap will be somewhere north of $5k.

Speak to Peter Hopkins at Advan Performance.

What details do you need to know regarding the driveshaft? Basically you keep the front section of the 135i items cut it then weld the back end part of a E38/E39 shaft which mounts up to the M3 diff (your 135i shaft has a different flange and wont mount to the diff hence why you must customise it)

You need M3 half shafts, you cant use your 135i half shafts (the m3 items are also much larger in diameter thus have a higher loading capacity)

If you have a bolted diff, the quaiffe will definately be cheaper, if your diff is welded well you may break even or may well be worth considering the extra $ for the M3 diff/shafts.

135i doesnt have bolted diffs
Also he can use same M drive shoft merried with 135i and he have to use 135i drive shaft bearing.

Ahh right that i didnt know!

Yes but generally the E38/E39 shafts are a lot cheaper then the M driveshafts (wreckers think cos its off an M3 a DS is worth $600 where as dirty old E38 DS is worth $50-100)

Yeah agree... But when you buy all together from one car it can be also cheaper. If you will be lucky you can get even with subframe that means M3 bushings and maybe even tie rods...

Thanks for the input. Very valid points which I will think over. My 135i is still under warranty, so I may not want to "bastardize" it just yet..

So if we're not looking to do the entire subframe swap, we can source the following parts;
- M3 differential (i was going to go with the auto 3.15 diff to be closer to my 3.08, 3.85 will be much on my dd)
- Rear half of a M3 DS (swap it at the U-joint) or an E39 Rear DS
- M3 rear axles. Is this simply for the added torque capacity or do they not actually bolt up the rear M3 differential?

Im debating between this and installing a wavetrac unit myself (have a full machine shop).

Ok, confirmed the axle differences 86MM diameter flange on the 135i vs 102MM on the M3

So could you use a M3 subframe with a 135i diff and not have to change brakes or the drive shaft?

In my hunt for a 2nd hand LSD, i've found an entire M3 subframe & Diff setup complete for $1200 + shipping. Just how hard is this swap for someone to do in the garage? Obviously the shaft will have to be sent out for welding tother, but is the rest simply a bolt-up job?

Garage List
What a bargain! Buy it before someone else finds it!

I've done a few JDM (Nissan/Honda) subframe swaps in the garage and its pretty simple, as long as you have patience and time on your hands

I think M3 rear hubs and rear M3 brake calipers have to be used ...

Nah they don't have to be used. I am using my 135i hubs and 135i complete front and rear brake system. There is no difference between the axle length on the 135i or the M3/1M. The only reason why M3s and 1Ms have a wider track is purely due to wheel offset.

If you do change the rear wheel carrier to the M3 ones however, then you will need to use the M3 brake calipers and rotors.

Hey mate,

I picked up a M3 diff - Is there a specific E38/39 drive shaft? Or are they all the same no matter what engine?

Cheers, Simon

any one know the specific wheel offset that would allow to fit under stock fenders? with the M3 rear complete rear end.

It remains the same, the wider track on the M3's is due to the wider/lower offset M3 spec rims (so whatever offset works on a 135i)
