Things I don't like about my E91

We've had our E91 for just over a month now and have covered about 1K miles so far.

Overall, I am mightily impressed with this car. However there are a few things I don't like.

1) Push-button start - it's on the wrong side of the steering wheel. Having used a key to start my car since learning to drive I find it really annoying that the button is near the centre of the dash. I would much prefer it if it was located nearer to where you would have placed a key on the earlier models for example.

2) Flat spot between 1st/2nd - we've got the 320d and I don't think the gearing is quite right between 1st and 2nd at very low revs. Both of us have stalled the car on several occasions usually at the worst time, ie. trying to cross another road/junction. Then I hate 1) even more as I flap around trying to start the thing again!

Other than that I am trying really hard to think of things I don't like, but I can't. Minor things would be:

Sparkling Graphite - gets filthy very quickly but looks great when clean, especially the chameleon colours in different light.

Profiles for seat/mirror memory - I still find this fiddly. Sometimes I get in the car and it won't remember my seat setting but it does on the other halfs keyfob and vice versa. Mirrors it gets right every time.

Starting - having to get in the car to start it!

1) Do you also have comfort access? I understand what you mean, although on LHD cars it is less of an issue, as the button is on the 'right' side.

2) I also noticed this when I test drove the 320d.

Why would you want to start a car without being in it?

I think he may be referring to a remote start mechanism.

No, wish we did purchase it but the salesman didn't explain it very well when we were specifying the car so we ignored it.

That is interesting. Any other 320d drivers experienced the same?

Usually if I want to warm the car up for a couple of minutes while I finish locking the house up etc.. or when I am cleaning the car and want to warm the interior before cleaning inside.

Totally agree re flat spot - I have stalled my E90 320d a few times, often when turning across the road. Mentioned this to a dealer, but he suggested it was just poor driving!! (in a customer-friendly joking manner)

I have to admit I am not too impressed with the CD unit - it keeps skipping on older, slightly scratched CDs which my old Passat unit was able to cope with.

Also, I can't seem to get the right "warm feet - cool face" mix. My feet often feel cold and so I have to override the "Auto" setting on the climate control. I have tried fiddling around with the settings via iDrive, but to no avail. Again, the Passat unit was "set and then forget" - got it perfect every time.

However, drive, engine, handling, interior get full marks and more so I still have a smile on my face when I approach the car.

P.S. rss - I live in Bassingbourn, 10 miles south of Cambridge so we may "meet" on the A10 some day.

There isn't anything wrong with the 320d. I noticed this "stalling" problem too when I first got the car, but it's just getting used to it. Like most bmw's you gotta give it a little gas before you release the clutch. I am used to my car now, and haven't stalled since 1 week after I got it.

Maybe you're right. However, we also have a 320i, a Z4 and until xmas an M3 and all of those are quite happy to go from 1st to 2nd at low revs without stalling.

Maybe it's just getting used to a diesel as this is the first we have owned.

Hooli - perhaps we will! Look out for sparkling graphite and very soon, 2 baby seats in the back with a springer spaniel doing somersaults in the boot!

I suspect, it is just some people getting used to driving a diesel. I have never stalled by 320d but my last car was a diesel as well. When I got my first TDI car (Audi), I remember stalling it frequently for the first few weeks.

Once you get used to driving a diesel, ironically, you will find it is much more unusual to stall it compared to a petrol engine.
