"Increased Battery Discharge" with new battery

I just picked up an OEM 720 CCA/90 Ah (exact specifications as my original battery on my '08) from the BMW dealer today. I took it to an independent shop to have them install and register for a slightly less insane amount than the dealership wanted. Parked the car at home and when I went to drive it ~3 hours later I got the warning "increased battery discharge" at startup and the time had been reset again. The message stuck around for a few minutes and then I turned the car off and back on to make it go away.

Any ideas? Is it a bum battery? Was it not registered properly? Why is everything that should be simple so complicated on this car?!

That would be my first guess. Take it back to your indy and have them check it.

All in the name of "technological improvements."

It's these types of things that make me miss my E30 and E36.

I had similar problem right after the dealer did the battery cable recall two years ago. All kinds of warnings codes flying. The dealer when I went back cleared the codes. I haven't had an issue since. They had the car in the back not even five minutes, so I know they could not have done anything more. So hopefully it's like the same deal for you. These car seem to do funny things sometimes when the battery is disconected.

I had the same issue when replacing my battery and registering AND coding it myself. Thought it might be a bad IBS (intelligent battery sensor) but before going out and buying a new one, I disconnected the IBS, reconnected it. No issues since
