The Ultimate 1-Series Buyer's Guide
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com As of today (7/18/16) this thread is BRAND NEW and ... UPDATE 7/19/16: I'm already getting great info from fellow members, keep at it! UPDATE (2) 7/19/16: Officially stickied, praise to the Mods! UPDATE (3) 7/19/16: Holy formatting Batman. I think I've got everything up to date, will update if we get more info. UPDATE 7/21/16: More info added from member suggestions, added amazon links for some tools, added aftermarket parts/mod sites. UPDATE 7/21/16: Featured on www.Bimmerpost.com!! Looking for info on N51 engine if anyone can offer it! I'm counting on current members to help me populate this thread! I'll continue to update this post as more people reply with helpful information, citing those who contribute. If you're here, it's most likely because you're considering buying a 128i or 135i. The goal of this thread is to help you make an informed decision and become a happy BMW 1-Series owner for years to come. First things first; we're not here to tell you whether the 128 or 135 is better for you, or that it's better than another car on the market, that's up to you to decide. Also check out The Ultimate Aftermarket Warranty Review: I lay it all out with invoices, detailed numbers, and other goodies to help you decided if a warranty is right for you, and if you can afford to own a 1-Series! So let's get started! Let's start with a quick intro: The first BMW 1 Series started production in 2004 with the E87, and was first brought to the US as 2008 models with the E82 (Coupe) and E88 (Convertible/Cabriolet) which started production in 2007. The most major revision year was 2011, which brought a new engine to the 135i as well as some interior and exterior changes. 2012 cars also saw a facelift, with new lights, and some changes to the interior and iDrive systems. In 2013 the 135is model was introduced and produced in very limited numbers. NOTE that some pre-2013 cars were marked as "135is" on their VIN-build sheets, this is not accurate, only 2013 cars are actually capable of being the 'is' model, we are not sure why it's listed on some earlier build sheets. 2013 was sadly the last year the 1-Series was produced, and they have now been replaced by the new 2-Series. We'll focus on the E82 and E88 128i for now, keep scrolling down for info on the 135i. 2008-2013 E82 and E88 128i: Specifications:

Working on that
335ito135i posted this on my profile: Nice thread. I would add Windshield washer tank leaks (definitely DIY fix for less than $100). Seems to be a fairly common issue and one that I'm experiencing right now. Adding to the main post!

Great idea and thanks for the legwork! I'll try to contribute
N52 problems:
If you're planning on DIY, I'd recommend these tools (on top of normal tools you need to work on any other car [metric socket set, jack stands, breaker bars, etc.]):
Air tools are fantastic too, my impact gets used quite a bit. Also an electric screwdriver (you'll thank me the first time you remove the engine/trans skid plate LOL) 128i maintenance req's:

Still learning these animals, but I had thought the n55 was also a candidate for the intake valve issues? The core DI design is still the same, just changing the VANOS for Valvetronic or whatever that eliminated the throttle body? If I'm way off on theory or terminology here I'll edit this paragraph to either remove it or make it more accurate and keep this thread on target.
Should injectors be mentioned here? I believe current rev is 12, and that they are available via rockauto, amazingly enough, as actual OEM parts for dirt cheap and distinctly easier to replace as a DIY than other DI engines out there- Speed6 injectors as an example BMWhat (used to be Carly) has a used car check that can be run to get details on service history & mileage- compares data to be sure data points are listing expected values. Suggest using a VIN decoder like bimmer.what to double check what's actually on/in the car. Look for oil around the oil filter housing re: OFHG wear- I was looking at pics earlier today if needed for this thread There's more, but it's dinner time......

Aren't the windshield washer fluid bottle and related parts shared between the 135i and 128i?
A few other things to note: N55 has Valvetronic, N54 does not. N54 uses problematic piezo injectors (which have been revised more than 10 times) and the N55 uses lower cost solenoid injectors. |

Minor point as most people will double check before purchasing or installing, but, the plugs for the 128i are shown as NGK LZFR6AP11GS on RealOEM and NGK's catalog. (These are 95712.) Only reason I caught this is because I recently bought a set a very good price even though don't need them now.

Quoted from an Amazon review (I know, not exactly the most credible source but it gets the point across): "The NGK website lists [NGK 6619 LFR6AIX-11] as a recommended plug for the N52 engine. This is not the plug recommended by BWM, however; the Bentley manual says to use NGK ILZFR6D11. I believe that NGK has updated their plugs since BMW made its original recommendations. If you go through realoem.com, they show different spark plugs for different years in the life of the N52 engine. For an '09, it would probably be the NGK PLZFR6A11S, though neither BMW nor Bentley recommend that one either." -C.A.M (2 years ago on https://www.amazon.com/product-revie...munity-reviews) Multiple NGK plugs on Amazon have a bunch of positive reviews, all mentioning BMWs with N52s, all saying they run just fine. I honestly don't think it'll make that big of a difference. There's a bunch of threads accross 1Addicts, E90Post, etc. discussing various plugs. All I know is I bought the NGK LFR6AIX-11 and I haven't had a single hiccup. Performance and gas mileage are great. ___ Some maintenance intervals I found a while ago Antifreeze: 60K Brake fluid: 24K or every 2 years Rear Differential fluid: 50K Spark plugs: 80K Manual gearbox fluid: 50K Oil change: 5K Power steering fluid: 24K or every 2 years Last edited by desertman123; 07-18-2016 at 07:52 PM.. |

Adding to the 128i N51/52 engines that the manifold gaskets commonly leak between 80-120k miles.
These cars do not support bluetooth music, only with third party adapters they are able to. That's all I have since my 28k mile 128i N51 has been problem free.

Since there are so few out there I'll wait till someone who owns one get's me some details to list Done! What manifold? Is this the valve cover you're talking about? That one was covered already. I'm going to note the bluetooth bit but haven't decided how yet. Overall the BT functionality (especially for Android) is just crap.

Thank you! This thread is invaluable - I wish I saw it when I was looking to buy. And you could say it doesn't support AD2P (I'm pretty sure that's what the bluetooth protocol for streaming music is called). Also 1 thing to add in the DIY section: an oil filter tool. Any Volvo/BMW 86mm/16 flute one will work. And to Amazon as my parts store (guilty, I love my 2 day shipping), you can find damn near everything there. |

Added these points as well and yes good call on the BT protocol that's a good way to nail it down. Thank you! Update: hmmm can't seem to tag any more people in the list, Jason is there a limit to this?

RE: Fuel injector details-
Reading further into this it seems RockAuto has some issues getting more than just one or two in stock at a time, and they appear to sell pretty much instantly. For their pricing it's worth checking them out, but don't be surprised if they aren't available or they don't have enough in stock to meet your needs. So, I pulled some data from ECS to provide a baseline for pricing and part numbers. I'd encourage shopping around and if you can find a better price from a place you are comfortable giving your credit card details to, then by all means get em! And, I'm a noob here still. This info should be correct- hell, it's what I'm filing away for my own use. That said, if I've borked something up please PLEASE speak up so correct data can be had! Quote:
The N55 platform doesn't seem to have the same injector issues that the N54 does, but with these prices it doesn't really matter. Quote:

Darn good question!
As a noob I'm still getting a handle on things n54, I haven't yet had the luxury of expanding & cross-referencing what I've learned to the 55 platform. I'm sure others here will be able to provide that info? I hope?.....

Hats off, Matt. This will be a great resource for new guys AND a wonderful repository of useful information for all existing 1-Series owners. We have a similar set up on the Yamaha FJRForum.com called the Bin o' Facts. It is set up by Generation, as there have been three distinct Generations of this wonderful Yamaha motorcycle. I am inclined to suggest similar divisions for our Ones, but that might result in too much repetition, so I will leave that up to you and the other major contributors.
Also, you may want to include a technical section for each Oner. This could include the following: Torque specifications for common fasteners Gear ratios for different tranny setups Links to maintenance and upgrade videos Tire recommendations Aftermarket parts sources Best OEM parts sources Group Buys on common upgrades, e.g., exhaust, suspension, wheels Accuracy of onboard metrics, e.g., speedometer, tach, temp, etc Dyno test results for common mods, e.g., Dinan, etc. Paint codes? Recall histories of each model Aftermarket lighting alternatives That's all I can think of at the moment. Hope this helps. Thanks again for working so hard on this!

You need to add the N51 engine for the 128i.
Describing what came in options like the Sport or M-Sport package would be helpful.
