Does M Sport = Sport Exuast

My 1 has a nice tone IMO, it is not as loud like an M car but not far from it. I have always assumed I have the sport exhaust simply because of how it sounds compared to other regular 335s & 535s. In my visits to this forums I have noticed that so many people want to add the sport exhaust and suddenly made me wonder if I even have it. Is there a way to know for sure? I checked VinDecoder and nothing was listed, not sure if exhaust type would be listed. I have not had a chance to listen to another 135 to compare so I was wondering if I have it or not. Thanks.

I believe black tips == MSport, chrome tips == PE?

The black tips are just part of the Shadowline package, your 135i does not have the PE from factory. That said, from what I understand, the 135iS gets the PE installed prior to delivery.

If the tips are welded on, it is the PE, if the tips are just slip on, you have the standard exhaust.

Although, I took my black stock tips and jammed them over the PE exhaust tips. So, there is that.

You can also look under the car(at the muffler box/tips) and look for a vacuum hose... IF the hose goes to a servo... you have the standard exhaust. IF the hose just slips onto a welded port on the exhaust pipe... you have a PE. Here is a pic of the standard vs PE exhausts...

stand exhaust with black tips... PE with chrome tips. On the left exhaust... notice the servo flap(lower black part) the PE do not have this servo. Some guys will pinch or remove the vacuum line on a standard exhaust - to get a slightly deeper exhaust note. It is commonly referred to as the "golf tee mod".

The PE also has a y-pipe to delete the resonator before the exhaust muffler. Maybe some did this to your car ?

Here are my stock N54 mids with the PE's y-pipe laying ontop of it. The PE's y-pipe deletes the factory rear resonator.

Will do. I had to cut the chrome tips so the black tips did not stick out too far. I am just not a fan of anything chrome on the car.

The black tips JUST fit over the chrome tips, they have to be "persuaded" on with a soft mallet. Sorry, no pics of the chrome tips cut. I cut the outer tip a little bit more than the inner to match the contour of the bumper.

I am not a chrome fan either. I kinda wish the PE tips were black or black chrome. Don't see myself cutting them up to fit those on though. If there were slip ons I'd try them.

BMW makes different PE's for almost all of the 1er's models. Heck even for a 116i you can get a PE.

The 128i(or 125i over here) have a smaller diameter exhaust pipe. Also they are only a rear section muffler, which you need to cut the 128i standard exhaust just after the center pipe. Here is a great DIY that user MikeinAlexandria made a while back...

That sounds like BS to me. The 128i won't fit. Smaller diameter pipe and it's only the rear can/muffler - no y-pipe at all.

A few years back... there was a German company near Dusseldorf(Inside Performance) who were making four exhaust pipe systems for 125i(128i's) and 120i cars. One forum member over here drove up from Ramstein AFB and had them install it on his 135i. The kit was quite expensive at close to 2,800 euros(I think?) bc it also need a special cf rear diffuser to work with the four M3 style tips.

But after a week or so of driving... the guy realized his top end power was cut off, bc the pipe diameter was really much smaller than his "stock" exhaust system. He had the shop put the old exhaust back on his car! I think he got a refund.

Inside Performance's 125i/128i four pipe exhaust system...

just FIYI.. here is what the 128i PE looks like... just by looking at the tips... it DOES indeed look like a 135i PE. But the kit is totally different and there is no resonator delete. This is why the 128i PE is so much cheaper than the 135i PE.

128i PE... note how its only the rear muffler and no pipe or y-pipe like for the 135i models.

I don't really like chrome either. Especially chrome wheels.

I like the PE exhaust tips better than the standard black tips because they are welded on and not slip on. Not a fan of slip on exhaust tips.

I ran over a piece of wood in my first 1er and it hit one of the tips and knocked it loose. Wouldn't fit tight after that. Even tried bending the clip back but no luck. Had to buy a new exhaust tip. That would never happen with welded on tips

I would like the welded on PE exhaust tips but think they would look better in black chrome. That would be the best of both worlds to me.

I hated the chrome look. Took the car to a muffler shop they cut the PE tips back a couple of inches and the stock black tips fit right on. Guy charged me 10 dollars to do it. Best mod that money can buy! LOL

I wasn't sure IF I was gonna like the chrome look... but after a few days it grew on me. Plus it looks "different" and over here in DE... people don't really know which model car I have until I leave them in my dust, on the Autobahn.
