130i totaled on the A94 autobahn near Munich yesterday…
A94: BMW-Fahrer rast in Lkw-Heck
Hi Guys, I just saw this over on the 1er forum… and thought you guys just HAVE to see this! This is one of those ohh no moments(!) on the autobahn. This accident happened yesterday (Weds) near Munich on the A94/Mühldorf. The 130i hit the back of a truck carring a back hoe (bagger) at 180 kph(!) never touching his brakes! This was Opa’s 130i. His grandson and grand daughter took it for a spin on the autobahn. The grandson was driving on the autobahn when he came up on two trucks. The first truck was a fuel transport truck (LKW) and the second truck (which he hit) was a low slung trailer truck carrying a back hoe. The second truck must have decided to pass the slow moving fuel/gas truck and the 130i crashed into the trailer at 180kph! The truck driver said he heard a bang and then pulled over expecting to see a blow out tire… only to see this 130i hanging off his trailer’s back end! The 130i driver had minor injuries and his passenger (his sister) had none! The truck drivers were both ok too. What sucks is under German law the car from behind is found at fault. Because it is the over taking car’s responsibility to safely pass a slower car! Even though I am sure the 2nd over taking truck probably pulled out into the passing lane (quickly and probably) without signaling or looking. He truck drivers will probably also share in the accident damage and ticket fines. I am guessing at 50% for the 130i and 25%/25% for the two trucks. I am sure some of our fellow German 1addicts will correct me on this. FYI.. all trucks in Germany have a national speed limit of 80 kph on the Autobahn. Every truck has a digital speed recorder and memory card. Most trucks drive close(er) to 100kph though. But fuel transport trucks that deliver gasoline… can only drive at 60kph on the Autobahn! And most do drive 60kph! So… this trucker with the trailer thought he could pass him(the gas transport truck) quickly but probably did not look or see the 130i coming up fast in his mirrors. Take a look at the pics! OMG WTF! German news website… Be sure to click on the bellow link and watch the video of the accident scene aftermath! http://www.innsalzach24.de/muehldorf/a94-pkw-geraet-unter-lkw-innsalzach24-1347120.html This is the original thread on the 1er forum.de http://www.1erforum.de/bmw-130i/schwerer-unfall-75863.html PS: I wonder what kind of car Opa will get next? 5star safety for the 1series i would say
as former dangerours goods safety adviser i have to point out that there was some kind of flammable solvent likely methylethylacetat in the tank, gasoline would be 33 / 1203 - oh god i am sounding like a guy from a german forum

^^Thanks for the info. Yea... I guess it wasn't a gasoline transport truck. But still the guy in the 130i was damm lucky! Flamable is flamable! This does show you how strong our cars are. Hitting a truck at 180 kph and walking away from the scene. The first thing I thought when I saw the pics was of a test crash 1er I saw at Muenchen's Verkehrszentrum (Traffic) Museum... more pics here of the traffic museum... The driver was very lucky. In a pickup truck, SUV, or small Japanese car he would be dead. A real testament to just how safe One series cars are!

I even think the e82 feels better made than an e87. When you close teh doors the e82 feels more solid then the doors of an e87. I just get the feeling that the coupe is built stronger than the hatches. ? |

They engineer the the sound the door makes when it closes, so not an indicator

Ouch! hitting a Truck with 180 is not that funny...
Thats a Problem with no Speed Limit on the Autobahn... I would only Speed that fast or faster on a 3 Lane AB... not a 2 Lane one + the AB Turns to the left...

Just to clarify one thing: if the truck was doing 100kph and the 1er 180kph, the relative speed was 80Kph, i.e. similar to hitting a wall at 80kph. Does anyone know what is the speed during frontal crash tests?

I just realized I never posted the video of the 116i crash test. Here it is crashing into a "soft" divider at 102 kph. And yes, trucks over here really do not speed much. They have speed data recorders on-board and when the special "truck polizei" stop them, they check the data VERy closely. Truck driver can only drive eight hours per day as well. And must take breaks too - durring that eight hour drive per day. |
