Maximum miles in a day

I saw both my kids between Christmas and the following Friday. I live in Lexington SC, one is in Parkvale Missouri and the other is in Rock Hill SC. I drove to Missouri on Christmas and it was a little over 1,000 miles and about 14.5 hours. Coming back I stopped at Rock Hill and it was just under 1,000 miles and about the same amount of time. Traffic was MUCH worse.

I think the first leg is my personal record for most miles in a day. I find my e88 (n52) to be a very comfortable cruiser. Roads were good and no wrecks (or tickets). If I had any trouble I would have stayed overnight and finished the next day but it went well so I did not.

I compared routes on my Garmin and my iPhone running Google maps. They gave the same route and were not as different as I remember. Characters were much bigger than I remembered on the phone making it much more useful for this. I still like using the Garmin to safe phone charges. But for a second opinion the phone is a good option. Both navigation units also were good to give gas options along the route. They also will give hotels and food options. Entertainment was the radio or a MP3 player (I realize streaming would be a more up-to-date option but I only do that over wifi just due to phone data charges).

Anybody else travel 1,000 miles in a day? Anyone go further? Any good thoughts on navigation, entertainment or other?

A thousand in one day is a lot! Must've been all highway. Max I've done in the 1er was like 550ish, almost 10 hours I think

If you pay for Spotify, you can download songs for offline use. Music quality through BT is noticeably worse than 320kpbs MP3 files on a USB stick, though.

The most I've done in a day is about 800 miles in my car, same in my wife's Mazda6 GT. That car has a lot of features that make road trips great, but the seats are not as comfortable as my 128i's sport seats and it needs more power. Overall I prefer the BMW on trips.

Waze is good for road trips because it calls out cops, stopped cars on the shoulder, and potholes. It's not perfect, but helpful. For local trips, Google maps is better.

Entertainment - the loudest music you can find on full blast, of course.

Nine hundred eighty. I’ve done two long trips in the 128, Madison WI to Des Moines, IA (bought the car in WI and drove home to AZ). Then to Albuquerque and Phoenix. Des Moines to ABQ was the long one.

Another one from Phoenix to Twin Falls, ID in one day. I’d have to double check the mileage on those...

I did ~750 miles in my 2002 to get to the 02/02/02 event in SC on a Friday, then did it again on Monday to come home. That's with dual Weber sidedrafts, a 300 sport cam, headers, a full polyurethane suspension with Bilstein Sports, and a 4 speed turning 3500-4000rpm the whole way. In between I got FTD at the autox in the BMW factory parking lot. Good times.

A few years later I did ~1000 miles in a SAAB 9-5 on a long weekend run to Jacksonville, or I would have had the turbo not exploded quite spectacularly right around the SC/GA border. Took a rental the rest of the way the next day, then did the return in one day as planned (picking up the repaired SAAB on the way). The SAAB was a really effortless highway car; a bit soulless, but an outstanding tool for covering miles.

I drove 750 miles in a day couple of years back in India. It was one fun drive. I had to drive through reserve forests (least human footprint) with narrow roads. I almost ran into a couple of elephants around a curve, who were calmly eating branches off a tree in middle of the roadway. It was an 18 hours drive with lot of coffee breaks, music and my then gf and current wifey on phone keeping me awake. Was it fun - YES? Will I do it again - NOO? Not alone at least.

Well, I'm a really old fart now. Summer of 2016 I did Ottawa Ontario Canada to Staunton Va in my 128 sports pkg and was comfortable all day including when I got out of car after about 12 hours. About 650 miles. Next day about 7-8 hours to Spartanburg SC. BMW Perf driving school.

The longest stint I've done in the 1er was about 500 miles. Had the wife, pup, and two bikes on the roof. Was a great trip and I'd happily double the distance.

Longest in general was any given trip from NJ to the Florida Keys when I used to make that drive at least once a year. I probably did about 800-900 at the longest, definitely never hit the 1k mark but now that sounds like a fun goal to meet for 2018!

For long drives I have a mental checklist of things to make it more pleasant:
  • Map route on Google Maps and print directions (in case of a black sky event lol)
  • Download local version of maps to phone using Google Maps (LOVE THIS FEATURE)
  • Download some Spotify playlists
  • Pack a case of water, usually a 12 bottle pack
  • Pack some snacks, easy to eat stuff like power bars
  • Bring my roadside emergency kit

Other than that, I avoid coffee until necessary, and try to coax someone to tag along. The best thing I've found to keep me awake is a co-pilot, I'm definitely a social creature. Coffee just ends up adding more time when you factor in the additional pit-stops needed as a result lol

I did about 1300 miles FL to CT in 20 hours before in an E36 323is. Drove my Ram 2500 to Cleveland from RI in 10 hours over 650 miles to trade in for M5 #2. M5 #1 was picked up in FL and driven back but time was split with a friend and a stop to see family in VA.

Used to long road trips as a kid we pulled a camper all around the country.

Co-pilot works best if you let her in the car. Even if you have a sunroof you can talk through, I've found that wind noise may drown out conversation once you hit the freeway. I imagine the dog loved that trip, though!

Did 1000+ mile trips before but not in the 135is. I did about 700 miles a couple days ago. (PDX to SFO) I've done the trips without any radio and with music. I think for most, attention span is just difficult. I don't find that issue with driving, usually. When in bad traffic then it becomes boring.

Car was fine. The only issue was that the exhaust drones is very loud with the top up. So we had to do top down even though it was pretty cold out.

Done 700 miles a few times in a 85 corolla hatch. No heat or a.c. when your young and have no choice you'd be amazed shit you can do.

It was indeed almost all highways and mostly 70 mph speed limit. I brought trailmix and pb crackers. Water to drink. I only stopped when I needed gas on the way back but I had a couple extra stops to recycle coffee on the way out.

Ya, pretty awful for sure. I don't know the context of that photo - but I'd hope the car was parked and the dog jumped up there. My dog gets buckled into a harness sorta like a seat belt in the back seat.
