Clunky noise from rear when car is cold
Has any one heard this before? Clunky noises from rear axel area when car is cold. Could be exhaust or deferential? It takes less than a minute to go away if I step in the gas and go faster. Then when I go slow again it's gone. Happens only when moving forward that's why I am thinking it's deferential. Any thoughts?

i hear it too...but it only happens ONCE. I just assumed it is normal. My car has a variety of little sounds i have noticed, but none of them seem too out of the ordinary based on my searches through this forum! ha

Are you sure this isn't the actuator that is opening or closing the valve at the rear of the exhaust? Are you both running stock BMW exhausts?
Can't remember the name of it but essentially the golf tee mod is plugging or tying this vacuum line to keep the actuator open at all times so you don't get the clunk and your exhaust is always sounding a not more aggressive and throaty. Alas I am not a pro on this as I have a straight pipe and therefore no actuator.... |

I've heard this a few times, either when cold or when hot... I think it's a heat sink (the one on the diff, perhaps?) making some noise as it expands or contracts as temps change. A little annoying, but I suspect it's completely harmless.

OK, I stand corrected... after some research, my noise is definitely this "cowbell" sound... most likely a pebble caught in the brake shield. Seems to be a common issue in E9x M3s, which I believe shares parts with the 1M.

It's a very common problem. Most likely a stuck pebble. Mine happened right after I drove through a short gravel driveway (never again). I took the noisy wheel off and that fixed it. Others have had the noise go away on its own.

I had this problem a few years ago and I hard break the car several times ,according to the suggestions on the forum, and it solved the issue. I recently got the problem back again and I tried breaking hard multiple times and the problem just wouldn't go away. Today I took my car in for the airbag recall, yes finally the airbag is here, and I had them look at the cowbell issue. Long story short, it costs me $360 (Cdn) parts and taxes included for them to take the brakes apart and clean the "foreign object" on both rear wheels and now the annoying sound is gone. The foreman told me that certain models have updated backplate to avoid little rocks from falling into the area, but not the 1M.

Our rear dust shields are VERY prone to this. We park in a gravel lot where I autocross. Imagine hot sticky tires, lots of pebbled getting thrown around at low speeds. I have to remove pebbles from the rear brakes after every event, unless I want to listen to the sound in that video.
