Manual trans fluid application question
Is it okay to use Pentosin 75W80 MTF2 Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid for our transmissions? I originally bought 2 liters for my e46 m3 I used to own but I sold the car and still have this. Any thoughts?

My transmission is different than yours but I think that is too thick. I would look on redline's website and see what they recommend for your transmission. If they recommend one of theirs that is equivalent in viscosity, then it should be OK.

Sure, why not? Look at it this way, what are you going to do with the oil otherwise?
Try it out and see if you like the way it shifts. It's not going to hurt the transmission. If you like the way it shifts, you're done. If not, try something else. You're not out any more money and it only takes about 30 minutes to change the oil. Tonight I'm putting in the 4th oil my gearbox has seen in a month. Just keep at it until you're satisfied. |

yup good point and the viscosity looks to be the same both at 75W80, so looks like I'll give her a try. thanks for the feedback.

Our cars came with Pentosin 75W80 MTF3 no MTF2. Now BMW uses MTF5 & 6 I believe. The MTF3 has been superseded to MTF5, the last time I checked at my dealer.
MTF3 for a N54 135i... https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=23_0926 MTF5 for the current F80 M3/M4's... https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=23_1224 I use Redline's ATF-D4 in my manual trans 135i. You can also use their D6 or MTL fluids in our manual transmissions as well. Errr... well... you could screw up your transmission by using the wrong spec oil. There is a reason why BMW recommends certain fluids. Oil does have a shelf life. After a few years of sitting on the shelf... the additives in the oil will start to separate out of suspension. I wouldn't use old oil in my lawn mower, much less my pride and joy. But that's just me. Dackel

I used an old quart of BMW brand oil in my lawnmower then I couldn't find anything else in the house. Seems to work fine. I don't change the lawnmower oil, the engine is too cheap and the change process too much trouble. I just dump more in when it's low. But it doesn't seem to burn or leak the BMW oil like it did the cheaper stuff.
