I'm not sure it'd be a huge improvement. I really liked the active steering on my E90 once I got used to it. I think the fastest ratio is actually faster than the M3 ratio too.

The ball joints are identical as far as my eye could tell. The M3 outer tie rods just had longer threads (more toe adjust ability). I used the M3 tie rods that came with my EBAY M3 rack because they had less mileage. I measure how much thread was exposed on my old rack and adjusted the outer tie rod on the M3 rack to match. Got the car aligned for peace of mind and toe was only off about .05* or so (like 1 thread/turn of the tie rod).

Thats actually wrong when you have an M3 rack with M3 control arms.
In that case you should use M3 tie rods. I foolishly believed the internet with this advice and purchased new stock tie rods to go with the M3 rack. Turns out the stock tie rods had to be extended out further to achieve correct aligment. My stock tie rods already had to be extended out ~5mm to compensate for the M3 control arms. They needed to be further extended out to work with the steering rack. EDIT: Looks like M3 tie rods won't work either, my bad. But the end of the threads of the M3 tie rods can be cut 10mm so the thread doesn't bottom out. This is probably more preferable than extending the non M tie rods so far out.

No I don't have M3 spindles. Toe doesn't change much based on ride height, otherwise the car would steer a lot on compression. My stock tie rods are extended out way more than the stock arms, stock rack.

How much thread is exposed on your tie rods with the stock tie rods + m3 rack?
A standard 135i has around 10mm of exposed thread. It should be noted I am RHD, so LHD might be different, although the M3 tie rods are the same part number for both LHD and RHD

The M3 knuckle is definitely a different part and the mount for the tie rod is definitely farther outboard than the 335/135 knuckle. I don't think there's any way the slight adjustment needed for the control arms is why the M3 tie rods are that much longer. |

I have M3 knuckle M3 arms and M3 rack and M3 front bits
1.8° camber with all the rods screwed in to the max I cant achieve zero toe, only slightly open toe if I use non original BMW tie rod ball joint (mahle) then I can achieve zero toe, maybe the thread inside goer further compared to original BMW ones |

I love the BMW heavy steering! I had an interesting conversation with another car enthusiast that was saying it's a deal breaker, either people love the heavy BMW steering or hate it. It's one of those things when someone drives me car their like wow the steering is so heavy!

EPS just feels outright wrong after having the M3 rack. Still surprise to see how may people cant get 0 toe with M3 tie rods. Maybe there are difference parts because the ones I used were only like 1/4" longer than my stock E82 tie rods. Maybe they were regular E90 tie rods? who knows... |

This is a cool mod, but I can’t say a faster rack has occurred to me. The rack on my Porsche 996 had around a 17.1:1 ratio, and I think my Cayman was about the same. The 135i rack is a little faster, and I’m not sure I’d call it slow.
Either way, cool idea. |

Its 100% worth the swap. The m3 rack eliminates any hand over hand action. even in the hairpins.

Hello. I have upgrated my E91 BMW steering rack with servotronic from M3. I've added to the VO the servotronic code $216. I've also connected the servo valve to the GBBF3. I've codded the servotronic option to active but nothing happened and the servotronic is not working. The steering rack is heavy.
Do you have any idea how to handle this issue? May I ask for some help. Thank you in advance. |
