I fixed the light and long pedal with the 335i (F30) front brakes.
Porterfield R4 racing brake pads (holy crap these things are amazing) and removing some of the nannies included in the DSC module. I coded out rain brake assist, maximum brake support, faded brake compensation, brake wear compensation, emergency brake readiness, and changed the front axle pressure model to 135i spec. Pedal is totally consistent, firm (not hard) and short (the PERFECT length for heel-toe) and hugely effective at hauling this thing down for the corners. Also have Motul 600 fluid, but I've always had that and it's never been an issue. The coding is pretty simple using the usual combination of NCS' Expert and Dummy.

Honestly, I don't know that it was what changed the whole feel, but it's part of what I did.

Here's the way to fix the parking brake problem when you put 135 rear brakes (aka BMW performance brakes) on a 128:
Buy a set of 135 parking brake shoes. Carefully grind the welds then break off the plate on the shoes (picture) Grind some dimples in the back of the 135 shoes & front of the 128 shoes. Make a simple jig (picture) to epoxy 135 shoes exactly 12mm out from 128's. Fill the gap with JB weld...you'll need 4 packages... Mount & adjust shoes...you're done. NOTE on full 135 brakes on a 128. WOW! Double WOW!! Incredible brakes! WARNING! You MUST upgrade to a 135 master cylinder. It's a direct fit. Use a combination of pressure bleeder & pedal-pusher to get all the air out...Be careful NOT to spill brake fluid!

A few months back i upgraded to OE 330i front discs and caliper carriers and swapped to ferrodo DS performance street legal pads all round.
Brakes are great on track, no issues. Only "complaint" is that those Ferrodos leave behind some material on the discs after a few sessions. Once cooled, the brake pedal is really low and gets a bit scary, 15 minutes of street driving and the material is gone and brakes are fine. So far i am very pleased and will be testing other pad combinations, i may get some Endless track pads and use ATE ceramic pads for the street. If things go well, i may even upgrade to some nice fat 335i front discs + carriers, 2-piece OE Z4 3.5is discs and upgrade rear calipers to 325i/328i (they are the same 42mm piston calipers in the performance kit). |

Hey Blacksport,
Nice idea on the JB weld! Question: Did you retained your 128 backing plates or did you changed to the 135 version? Thanks |

My pedal went too far with the 128 MC...the 135 MC completely fixed that, price was only $150 (don't buy from BMW...their price is $400)

Using the 128 backing plate, the 135 won't fit...

Finally took the plunge and went with the Performance kit. The rear is *almost* identical to stock but has larger pistons (a few mm oermither threads). For me this is an incredible upgrade over stock. I bought the car at 80k miles and just did the replacement at 95k so plenty of use with the stock which had fading pads. No track (yet), but lots of spirited fun on Bay Area roads.
Sometimes with the deluge of information and opinions out there you have to change the question from "why" to "why not". I got the kit about 30% off retail from a buddy on the east coast and paid my mechanic 3 hrs of labor to swap. No brainer for me. New Mich Pilot Sport 4S at the same time...so...holy crap things just got more fun. |
