so I just got back from my shop installing the ATM FMIC
only diff I guess is they didn't bother putting that front bracket back on, does it matter houtan? the one that kind of covers the FMIC? I seen other people go without it?

Congrats on getting your intercooler installed.
are you referring to the two vertical pieces that sit kinda at an angle in the front air dam? if so, I don't think it can be removed without being cut off so i'm assuming your shop cut both pieces off. I don't think it's an issue since other intercoolers require those two pieces to be cut off. It definitely does not need to be cut off to fit the ATM intercooler though. IMO it looks way cleaner with the two slats removed. you have me considering cutting mine out the next time I have my car on jack stands. Be sure to post your impressions or logs of the intercooler after you've had some time to drive with it installed. I think it would be great to hear feedback from more people.

well color me impressed. I had just done some logs yesterday and the day before. I have about 3-4 gallons of E85 with the downpipe. It is about 85-90 degrees here in FL now.
The runs were on the same road and same gears.. 2nd, 3rd, 4th STOCK: Ambient Thermal IC As you can see the IAT raise is MUCH less as you move through the gear, but more impressive is how fast the IAT recovers in between runs So far really impressed will post full review don't mean to hijack ur thread but figure be nice to have all in one full logs: http://www.datazap.me/u/inimeg/log-1...log=0&data=1-4

houton,
Thanks for this excellent and detailed write up. I noticed in the pics you title "Passenger side" and "Intercooler angle 1" that the intercooler on the passenger side appears biased more towards the front of the car. At least it appears that way because the mounting screw is towards the rear of the slot in the mounting bracket. The slot in the mounting bracket appears to give you a little leeway in mounting since it is much larger than the mounting screw diameter. Can the intercooler move forward or backward depending on where the mounting screw sits in the slot? I wonder if the passenger side could be pushed rear ward more would that give enough room in the front such that the ambient temp sensor bracket doesn't need to be trimmed on the 135i? Just curious as to what you think since you have seen it in person. |

No problem. Thanks for reading it.
The mounting brackets allow for a little leeway when mounting the intercooler. I think the bracket is designed that way to account for the small variations from car to car though. Once the intercooler is pushed up, it is a very snug fit against the fan behind it, and the plastic bar in front. You cant push the whole fan assembly back to fit the intercooler behind the temperature bracket, it is a very snug fit. If you have a dremel, it would take 10 mins max to carefully shave down the bracket like I did. Some people just cut off the bracket and zip tie the sensor. But after test fitting the intercooler, I could see that it was possible to save the bracket and the original mounting location. So that is when I decided to "notch" the bracket. hope this helps. Thanks for this write up and review.
Such a quality looking piece. This too made my decision for the FMIC. I missed out on the last batch so I have a deposit in for the next batch. |

I have a question that I hope I can find an answer to before I get my intercooler.
I recently purchased an ER chargepipe, but chose to get the long version for my N54.(they would ship faster) I ordered a normal Intercooler from ATM without the j pipe.... do I need the j pipe now or will my chargepipe reach my intercooler? |

bump for old times sake. It appears ATM was shut down for a while, but they are now back under new management and this intercooler is now available again. Mine is still working great.

I just noticed this was such an old thread. Sucks that good quality places shut down after some time. I might have to jump on this before they go out of business again.

Agree. Hopefully they are back long term. It is a great product. I just installed a pure turbos stage 2 turbo so now I look forward to seeing how the intercooler handles the additional power.

I just felt like bumping this thread because my ATM intercooler is still as awesome as the first day I installed it (about 4 years ago now).
If you're thinking about getting an intercooler and shopping around, look through this thread. |
