Another clutch question compatability related
I'm gathering parts to replace the clutch in n51 sulev 6speed. Was wondering if there are stock options like using the clutch and pressure plate from a 330i or 135i that would be sturdier. My goal is to keep it stock but have longevity at the same time.

Honestly I wouldn't worry about upgrading. Even with Full Bolt On's, this platform does not push enough HP or TQ to wear out a stock unit any faster from what I have gathered.
Now if you are looking at rotational weight savings such as a lighter flywheel, that is a little different. But I have used those across the board on a ton of vehicles I have had in the past and the biggest differences I have seen was that the engine would go through the rpm range a little faster. But then you sometimes have to deal with drawbacks as well as they do have their downsides. How many miles have you got on your current setup? I have read of people putting tons of miles on these cars without ever having to touch the clutch.

TX for the response... On the e90 forum I think I came across that the 330i had a different clutch set up but that it's physically compatible lending to longevity Currently have 140k miles on it but unsure how the previous drivers were. I'm experiencing a little jerkiness upon take off from 1st and the cdv has been done. Also the engagement point seems to high up in travel.

Take a look at the Valeo single mass conversion kit, comes with everything you need and will last longer/will be more reliable than the factory dual mass flywheel kit. It's also way cheaper....and from reports, clutch action is more progressive/better.
Only downside is a bit more noise / chuntering at idle (because of the single mass flywheel). The flywheel is not lighter, just a single mass design (it's the same weight as the dual mass stock unit). Example: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-valeo-pa...it/835115~val/ HTH |

If that one weighs the same, wonder where the noise is coming from?

https://www.e90post.com/forums/showp...9&postcount=31 If you sift through the few threads that pop up, seems like all things being equal you'll get a bit more gear noise at idle. The people complaining about huge amounts of noise/harshness have other mods coupled with this kit, so it's not easy to compare apples to apples..otherwise most complement the improved clutch feel. |

My car has 192k miles on it, and I'm still on the original clutch. It feels the same way you describe, but I'm gathering that that's just how our clutches are. There's a shop near me that has a race-prepped E90 328i that's done an actual 150k+ pure track miles, and they only recently had to replace the clutch. BMW does a good job with clutch durability.
When I eventually have to replace it, I'm probably going to do the Valeo single mass conversion for a little extra longevity, and reduce future replacement cost (DMFW's cannot be resurfaced like SMFW's can).

I have never owned an automatic. I have never heard a "loud" clutch. Every other car I've owned has been a single-mass flywheel. What is this loud clutch of which you speak?
I plan to go with the Valeo single-mass (stock weight) when my clutch needs replacing. Last edited by Thunderguts; 06-28-2019 at 10:51 AM.. |

Thanks for the responses I was considering the single mass flywheel conversion kit but the true question I have is will a 330i clutch and pressure plate work or 335i even?

One thing I hate about my stock 128 clutch is the shudder. I've never experienced this much shudder with a clutch before. It's just like baked-on brake pad residue causing brake shimmy. The clutch pads don't have uniform grip-they grip and slip, grip and slip, causing the shudder.
The solution is easy enough, slip the clutch enough to get it hot and it will deposit uniform residue on the flywheel and stop the shudder. I've done this several times and it always works, but I shouldn't need to. That's the main reason I want to try the Valeo kit. All of BMWs pads seem very prone to deposits, both brake and clutch. |

That's it... It's the shutter that I may be interpreting as maybe clutch slipping. Seems like it's normal based on responses I do notice that slipping the clutch and getting it warm helps it out big time

Yep. You many not actually need a new clutch. My shudder was getting really bad, but after heating up the clutch quite a lot, it was buttery smooth for a few months.
