Return to the 128i thread....

My past threads...

https://www.1addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1207389

https://www.1addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1290259

So I am back with the 128i Sport 6 MT with minimal options. Sunroof, Power seats and Sport. I have been looking since December 2017 for the right car.

Really happy with car and feels tight even though she is at 86k miles.

This will be my log of mods and fun and games with this car.

So far Redline MTL, Valvoline full synth 75w-90 diff, golf tee mod, and clutch delay valve tossed, my old BMW window screens and Euro warning triangle are also on the car now.

Will get the paint done by a detailer then install my old CF rear spoiler.

It is great to be back in a NA 1er.

Polished the headlights today and while I was in the area I check the air filter. It was in good shape and I believe a K&N. Nicely oiled...not drippy. Just right.

Removed the Charcoal filter.

Checked the cabin air filter and they are due soon.

Some cleaning and done for the day.

Last weekend pulled the much reviled CDV and tossed it. I always bled them afterwards but others said it was self bleeding so I didn't and there was no issue at all. If you have not done this mod go do it.

I also changed the trans fluid to Redline MTL and the diff to spec oil.

Undertray has some cracks in it so that is on the list to get replaced.

Time to go for a drive.....

Out of curiosity: why'd you ditch the 135i for a 128i again?

Because I'd much rather drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.

For me the 128 is better balanced, sounds better and does the things I want out of a sports car better than the 135.

I will totally give the 135 all the kudos for straight line speed. The thing was a monster and it was barely modded.

Torque and top speed are not something I judge my cars by. Although you do have to have a minimum power to weight ratio...and the 128 is fine.

I was the same way with my SpecE30 325i racecar and my track toy 318is. My most fun track days were in the 318is. I have to say that the actual racing with SpecE30 was some of the most fun I ever had on track....but the 318is e30 was the better driver.

Either way I don't want to start the N55/54 vs n52 debate in my thread...

As a BMW sales staff I can take a regular production new BMW off the lot anytime. the current 0-60 times from regular production M340 or M550 is nearly half what my 128 is.

NA i6 in our cars may have had time pass by for speed but the amount of compliments of folks who have much nicer or faster BMW's say some sort of "this car is dialed in" or "what a fun car" making my car not about it's speed. Instead it's how nutrient to my spirit and DNA the car is.

Tuxedo gets it.

All that speed and acceleration is a wonderful thing. But you can only go so fast for so long before you get your self in big trouble. Especially in Virginia.

A back road dancer is far preferable ....especially one that you can run up an down the gears....and listen to the intake and exhaust. That reminds me....I need a PE!!

Anyone got a PE for me?

Put my old CF trunk lip on today.

If I could own a manual I would have a 128i, or if I could get it with a dual clutch I'd have that. 135i the speed is intoxicating but many of us owners make improvements looking for improved balance and dynamic feel.

Great find. Just the perfect car for me. A few upgrades here and there and I just can't think of a more fun and practical car, just great in the twisties.

I'm toying with the idea of supercharging my 128i and start building it into E46 M3 like power/handling. The ECS kit allegedly behaves like normal until 4,000rpm where it opens up and things get crazy. I like winding my engines out and letting them run out of steam at the top end. Not always best for commuting or driving on the street but I think this will make my 128i very unique. I have driven so many cars lately and while the car feels extremely underpowered compared to my Z4MR or 991.1 it has way more feel than any modern small four seater I've driven. Everything from the steering (and especially the steering!), brakes, clutch, turn in, etc feel like a car should. No joysticky electrical numbness.

Can't bring myself to part with it but need to pep it up a bit and make something unique out of it.

I may not want the 135 drivetrain but I do like the look. Lucked into some Crimson front and rear valances from a guy who was doing a 1m widebody.

Polished the head lights while the body was apart and installed a used undertray I got from the same guy.

Here is the result....

nice car, I am with you on the slower car fast rationale - 128i msport has plenty of power to have fun, and can cruise fast on highway if needed. I also have an E30 318is, and this car is the new version. I have a space grey 2013 6mt msport with almost 30k miles now. Love it . . .

I appreciated your below comments.

It's nice that you very much appreciate the 128i, even with your access and ability to drive newer and faster machines.

Bought a berk street I need to modify to work with the 128i System.

(If anyone has experience please chime in)

Found a set of 17 " wheels for my winter package.

Had an odd experience the other day. Came out after lunch and car was completely dead. Like you had popped the ground off. Tried a jump pack and nothing. Later tried it with no jump pack and started right up.

14. volts at the battery idling. Disconnected all terminals and cleaned the contacts...they had a slight powder white film on them. Load tested the battery and found it good.

Reset the windows and date/ time.

Next day disconnected the Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) since that seems to be a potential issue. Battery looks relatively new and load tests fine on my HF load tester. Not very sophisticated. May pull battery and have it properly tested or just replaced it since these cars are so voltage sensitive.

NGK Spark plugs today.

One tube had a tiny bit of oil in it. Guess a Valve cover gasket is in my future....

Plugs appeared to be original BMW branded.....big gaps compared to the new ones.

Runs much smoother and I bet the mileage jumps.
