N55 Ticking/Rattling on Acceleration WITH VIDEO
Video:
Need some help from you guys. My 2012 N55 135i has been having a ticking noise under acceleration for about a year now. Car has 70k miles on it and I noticed a few months after I bought it last year, that with my radio off and windows down i can hear a ticking sound from the front of the car. With the windows up you don't hear it. AC on and off is the same. Sport or comfort mode same. Only happens when the engine is fully warmed up and between the rpms at idle to 3K. After 3K the ticking goes away. There is NO sound revving in neutral/Park. Its silky smooth sounding revving in neutral without anything abnormal. Its more noticeable when driving next to a wall or highway divider where the sound echos. If i apply very light throttle, no ticking. Moderate to heavy throttle it ticks up to 3K and stops. Car is stock besides an intake, and this issue hasn't seemed to affect drivability at all. I'm really interested in going pure stage 2 in the future though, and would feel a lot more at ease if I figured this out before investing too much money into it. Any ideas guys? |

Can't really make anything out with the video. Hopefully someone else can.
Does it increase with wheel speed or engine speed.

EDIT: You can hear it pretty clearly at the 3 second mark of the video where I accelerate slightly. |

If you let off throttle, clutch in, or shift to neutral and roll does it go away?

It's a DCT, not manual, so I can't just disengage the clutch. That being said, as soon as I let off the throttle the noise stops, and it doesn't occur at all when the car is in neutral. It only occurs on throttle in gear

Hmm. That's interesting. If it's not present rolling with engine speed at 3k off throttle then I think we can rule out bearings and wastegate.
Does it happen in any gear? Could be flywheel chatter. Dunno if that happens with DCT.

I haven't tried rolling it in neutral, just in neutral at a standstill, so maybe i'll try that today. From what I noticed, it does happen in multiple gears at low speed. I can only hear the ticking until about 20-30mph. I haven't tried higher gears that much because I didn't want to lug the engine too much, so maybe i'll try that today as well. Maybe flywheel chatter but I just don't know, I'm not sure how I could narrow this down to that unless I got an external mic and stuck it right next to the transmission while driving. |

See if it ticks while in neutral while coasting.
If it doesnt, I'd really recommend taking it to a European performance shop if you have a good one near you.

I'm not really picking anything up in the video either (will listen again later when I have headphones).
Simple suggestion but.. It wouldn't be a rock or something stuck in your tire would it? There's also reports of some rear brake pads with the balancing weight that comes loose and makes some sort of noise but I haven't heard in person to compare. |

Factory splash shield in place correctly?
It stiffens the inner fenders which can deflect at speed and rub a tire. Faster speeds may just be drown out by surrounding noise. Simple enough to turn a wheel to full lock and have a look for rub marks. |

Had this exact issue on the exact same car (‘12 N55 DCT) while driving on the highway. Same as you, only on throttle. Randomly stopped after about 10-15 mins of that highway driving and hasn’t happened again since. Will follow this thread closely as I’d like to know what’s causing this and hopefully prevent it from happening again.

Just want to update this thread and let everyone know that I'm almost positive I have SOLVED this issue finally!
During some recent modification of the car, I've had to cut the exhaust off at the axel, which deletes the muffler. After doing so I no longer hear the noise. This car has had the golf tee mod for ages, but I'm assuming that even though the exhaust flap is forced to be open constantly, it can still rattle. Either that or the muffler itself had an issue. |

I have a 2013 DCT 335is. Car just rolled past 78k miles and I'm having the exact same issue!. The problem is only audible at low rpms and fades away at higher rpms. It does not occur while revving stationary in neutral. Only in drive. I'm not sure how the exhaust flap issue would occur with me since I have 4" aftermarket tips. The best way I can describe the noise is that it sounds like injectors firing up and the noise goes up with the vehicle's speed/rpms. I have new index 12s and they were installed nice and snug by BMW. All logs came out fine. The noise is only heard when the throttle is pressed lightly about 15-20% (right after burble engagement position if you have burbles or PPK).

Following as I’m having the same issue.
It seems the ticking noise is audible when I apply throttle at lower engine rpm and as soon as the engine provides good torque, it goes away. Not sure buy I was thinking it’s bad wheel hub bearings? Anyways, I will follow this thread as I’m really curious to know what actually causing it. Thanks! |
